Why are there so FEW movies about what was happening in the EAST during the period from about 1850 - 1900? The movie industry has made many, many WESTERNS, but where the hell are the EASTERNS????

GANGS OF NEW YORK is one example. I'm sure there are more. Can anyone name some of them?

FAR AND AWAY starring Tom Cruise was one. Directed by Ron Howard. I don't remember seeing the whole film. I know boxing or fighting was involved in some Eastern city. Might have to check this one out again.

also if you want you can include LAST OF THE MOHICANS. You might want to throw in any Revolutionary film.

I think one of the problems with EASTERNS is that the cities and towns don't have cool names. For instance:

In a western, the sheriff might tell the bad guys, "I'm giving you 'til sundown to get out of Tombstone."

In an eastern, the sheriff would have to say something like, "I'm giving you 'til noon to get out of Baltimore."

Or:

In a western, the bad guy might be "the meanest man west of the Pecos."

In an eastern, the bad guy might be, "the meanest man east of Niagara Falls."

It just doesn't work for me.

The settings with open Mountain spaces and dusty lawless towns. Even in colonial days law was in place for the most part.

Of coarse westerns movies entered the world of myth and the events were't as common as the movies make them out to be. Maybe an "Eastern" movie set in 1800's that would focus on a part of society that was uncommon and make it look like it was a commonality of the times. Like aliens from outerspace being the norm in the 1800's an they would invade New York, Philadelphia, and Boston and steal all of their cornbread and milk leaving the colonialist without calcium and them easy prey. Well, maybe that wasn't a good example, but darn-it I need more brain power.
