Today was Thanksgiving here in Canada. In fulfilling family obligations this weekend, Lori and I ate three huge Turkey dinners in three days. One was actually a large chicken, but the result was the same. As I type this, I'm feeling terribly full.
While taking a break from cooking the dinner we hosted, I took a moment to see what was on TV, and was unable to take my eyes off a Thanksgiving special that simply must be seen to be believed. By the animation and the voices, it had to be a half-assed Hanna Barbera production from the late 70s. Few people know that the first Thanksgiving was saved by a talking squirrel. Not only did this special have a talking squirrel, it had crappy songs, questionable history, bad jokes, aboriginal stereotypes, and two mischievous young boys who wander off, and must be saved from an evil, vicious wolf. There was also a particularly rosy depiction of Pilgrim-Indian relations. The animation was lazy, even for an HB cartoon of the time, and a lot of really obvious recycling was done. It was unbelievable.
There are lots of bad holiday specials out there - Rudolph's Shiny New Year, The Star Wars Holiday Special, to name a couple. What are your favourites?
