I AM serious, and stop calling me Shirley

This movie came probably from the early 1970's .... I remember watching it when I was young.  Here's the best I can recall from the plot.

It took place on an island.  On this island, there were some creatures who, as I recall, were sorta half turtle half ostrich (neck and head) or snake or something.  Every few hours, they would, 'split' in two, like mitosis or something.   If memory serves, when the split, they looked somewhat like vomit.   Anyway, splitting is how they reproduced.  I don't remember exactly why they were so antagonistic to the people on the island, but the people were in 'survival' mode and trying to kill the creatures.  I remember one scene vividly with the main character chopping one of the creatures with an axe.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Almost positiver it's "Island of Terror," a 1965 British (non-Hammer) production with Peter Cushing and Edward Judd. The creatures were called "Silicates" and were blob-like with one upraised, probing tentacle. They were the result of cancer research gone bad, and fed on bone matter (leaving skeleton-less corpses in their wake.) At one point, Cushing's character has to chop off his own hand when one of the beasts affixes itself to it. It used to be available on VHS via MCA, but I don't think it's out on DVD yet. Does this sound familiar?

Wow - that description just brought back a rush of vague memories.  Does it end with a Brit saying: "Thank God this happened on an island where it could be contained.  Imagine if it had happened on the mainland."  Then they cut to a scene of a Chinese researcher in a lab who walks through a door and starts screaming in terror?

I think I saw this when I was real young.  Now I've got a title to look for.

Yep, Eirik, that's how "Island of Terror" concludes. Hopefully, this'll get a nice DVD release sometime soon.

Wow...thanks!  I bet that's it, because now that you mentioned it, I remember the axe scene involving cutting the hand off.  The female character looked away in horror.

I have been trying to think of the name of this movie for 20 years.
