I bought Cinefear's DVD release of this infamous blaxploitation horror movie. I had a chance to watch it last night (after the NFL playoffs, of course). Bravo to Cinefear for its quick delivery . . . I received this about 3 or 4 days after I ordered it.
Here are my thoughts:
1. This movie was transferred from film, not from the negative. The first few minutes of the movie are a bit scratchy and the frame jumps a few times. After that, the quality improves a bit, but remains a little fuzzy throughout the movie. Also, the colors are somewhat washed out and many scenes have a brownish or orange tinge. Not bad for an AIP B-movie that has been so hard to find for so many years.
2. The movie blatantly copies a few things from THE EXORCIST, but isn't as much of an EXORCIST rip-off as much of the literature out there might lead you to believe.
3. You'll get more chuckles than scares watching it. I was more intrigued by the funky 1970s fashions, big afros, and typical 70s music than I was by the plot or characters.
4. The stars are Carol Speed, William "Blacula" Marshall, and Austin "Assault on Precinct 13" Stoker!
5. Austin Stoker plays a cop. In one scene, he fires two bullets into the ceiling of a bar room, even though there are rooms upstairs!
6. To put yourself in the proper frame of mind before you watch it, think of it as a cross between THE EXORCIST and SUPERFLY.
7. This would make a good (bad) double feature with NURSE SHERRI (aka THE POSSESSION OF NURSE SHERRI, aka BLACK VOODOO).
8. The DVD extras include: a few pages of text describing some "behind the scenes" issues, the theatrical trailer, a radio spot, posters & lobby cards, and still photos.
