Godfather is at the top of my list.  One day out of the year I have this personal tradition that I have been loyal to for many years now.  I watch all my favorite movies.  I always find it fun and I have my wife to share this experience with.  We love all the gangster movies.... The Godfather, Goodfellas, Scarface.... etc. etc. etc.

Whats your favorite gangster movie? and why?

Goodfellas is by far my absolute favorite Ganster film.

The film just oozes "cool".  It is perfectly directed and acted.  How can you go wrong with Martin at the helm and actors like Liotta, DeNiro, and Pesci!?  It even contains one of my favorite scenes of all time.

*Spoiler*

The scene that I'm speaking of, is the scene where they begin to discover the bodies  of the people who were in on the big heist.  Eric Clapton's (Derrik And The Dominos if you wanna get technical)  "Layla" is playing as the police bein to find the bodies.  Amazing stuff.

*End Spoiler*

As for other gangster flicks, Scarface is probably second on my list.  Fantastic acting out of Al Pacino throughout the flicks entirety.  Scarface is also one of the most quoteable films of all time.

My 2 personal favorites are: Scarface...... well for the obvious reasons, the cool accents and of course Al Pacino. I just love that guy.
And: Once upon a time in America. Great, long and epic, FANTASTIC performance by Robert de Niro.
I also enjoy the godfather, but it can get a bit tedious at times. There's nothing wrong with 'slow' movies and there's nothing wrong with the godfather being a bit slow paced at times (leaves room to develop characters) but it just gets a bit on my nerves sometimes. That doesn't happer with the other 2 movies I just named :)

good question, Once Upon a Time in America is one of my favorites, it's an extremely moving tale, sort of a mix of a gangland epic, coming-of-age, history, and a lost love story combined in one film. one hell of a cast too.

Goodfellas is great, i also love A Bronx Tale in respect to the Italian gangster, NY stories.

State of Grace is also a great and underrated gangster pic, more of a take on the Irish mob in NY.

I love Goodfellas, because I have an urge to gorge myself every time I watch it!

First time I saw this, I was in college and hadn't eaten that day. When they started describing the garlic that's so thin it liquefied in the pan, I couldn't get to the phone and order a pizza fast enough!

It's also got a great editing error - While Paulie is talking to the owner of the Tiki Bar with Henry, he has a cigar in his mouth at the start of one sentence and at the next camera change the cigar disappears!

Great flick...

While on a journey, Chuang Tzu found an old skull, dry and parched.
With sorrow, he questioned and lamented the end of all things.
When he finished speaking, he dragged the skull over and, using it for a pillow, lay down to sleep.
In the night, the skull came to his dreams and said, 'You are a fool to rejoice in the entanglements of life.'
Chuang Tzu couldn`t believe this and asked, 'If I could return you to your life, you would want that, wouldn`t you?'
Stunned by Chuang Tzu`s foolishness, the skull replied, 'How do you know that it is bad to be dead?'

Several of my favorites are (in no particular order, except for GODFATHER and GODFATHER II, which are my two favorite movies of all time):

* GODFATHER
* GODFATHER PART II
* BONNIE AND CLYDE
* DILLINGER (with Warren Oates)
* GOODFELLAS
* CASINO
* MEAN STREETS
* FINGERS (not a full-fledged gangster movie, but it definitely qualifies)
* ANGELS WITH DIRTY FACES
* SCARFACE (with Al Pacino)
* ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA (the director's cut . . . the edited U.S. theatrical version is a mess)
* THE GRISSOM GANG
* DONNIE BRASCO
* A BRONX TALE
* THE COTTON CLUB (somewhat of a guilty pleasure)
* BUGSY

Carlito's Way - Brilliant film. The ending is so brilliantly acted, you want to reach out and help the good guy, or kill the bad guy! :o) Trying not to give to much awaym you see...

And, of course....Chinatown. Jack Nicholson is fantastic in this film that shocked audiences with it's (for it's time) ending. Love that one too.

.  .  .  .  Do you only mean Italian gangs? I'll list my favorites that are more specifically centered on gangs, and ones that I know of for other cultures/ethnicities,
.  .  .  .  Italian:  Goodfellas, most Mob films bore me, but I liked this one more than any other that I've seen.  Joe Pesci and Ray Liotta are great in it.  (Parody:  Mafia!).
.  .  .  .  Black:  South Central.  (Parody: Don't be a Menace...).
.  .  .  .  Vampire:  Strange Things Happen at Sundown.
.  .  .  .  Irish:  Gangs of New York (haven't seen it, so it's a guess, but it's only Irish gang I've heard of, other than that listed).
.  .  .  .  Jewish:  Lost in Yonkers, (only a very, very minor character, but the only one I know of).
.  .  .  .  Asian/Yukuza:  seen only a few and don't know any off hand, the only thing I can think of is The Replacement Killers.  (The parody on "The Simpsons" about "...that little guy..." makes me laugh).
.  .  .  .  Many types of gangs:  The Warriors.
.  .  .  .  W.A.S.P.:  The Outsiders.
.  .  .  .  Latino:  Scarface.
.  .  .  .  Aryan:  American History X.
.  .  .  .  High School:  Duck! The Carbine High Massacre (only read Joe Bob's review).
