We're all just victims of circumstance

« on: July 16, 2004, 05:22:18 PM »

I was there today and picked up a VHS copy of  "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai" for $2.00 .  They had  quite a few other old movies there too (plus a lot of Spanish dubbed American films). Just wanted to pass the word if you have one of these stores near you, it might be worth checking out. It's VHS, but what the hell it's also only 2 bucks.

If you haven't heard of it , Big Lots is a close-out store.  You never know  what they are going to have from one week to the next , but you run across a nugget once in while.  I like checking these kind of places out  for that very reason.

We have one here in Cedar Rapids, Iowa but I've never been inside one.
They took the old Econofoods grocery store and transformed it into a Big Lots.

Along with the Dollar Tree, which I also have never been in, I'll have to visit it sometime.

Big Lots is pretty good.  They've got some good stuff for low prices.

I got me a Hammer "Scars of Dracula" -- with the Warner Bros./WB imprint -- for $1.99 on VHS at the Longmont, Colorado Big Lots.  Never been opened!!  Lots of extras!!
Immediately lent it out & may never see it again . . .
But what the hell -- What do you do if you don't share the wealth?  Put it on a shelf & let it be a dust magnet?
I guess you gotta take some risks . . .

I got a DVD of Carnosaur 2 there once for 2 or 3 bucks.  Also a great place to buy ludicrously, almost cartoonishly gigantic boxes of tasty generic frozen corn dogs and other assorted treats.

We have a Big Lots in our area too. I've found all kinds of DVDs and VHS movies there. But I've also found some really cool computer games for like $1.99. These are great "junk" stores!!

I haven't been into the local BIg Lots much, but when I have been I got some decent CDs there cheap, mostly some live concerts from the BBC that used to sell for a lot higher before they hit the cut out bins, and an odd live Screamin' Jay Hawkins performance from the 80s apparently. Only of interest to me pretty much, but I was glad to find it.

Moviewise, I've found less good stuff, but they did have a couple of VHS anime tapes. A couple of episodes of "Tenchi Muiyo" and "Akira" of all things for a $1 each. I bought the "Tenchi" and never watched it. I bought that same version of "Akira" years ago for much more, and had recently purchased the deluxe DVD version. BUt was still surprised to see it there.

MacFrugal's!?
That has to be one of the most horrid names for a store that I've ever heard.

It sounds like the name of a nerdy science teacher.
"What did you learn in school today son?"
"Mr. MacFrugal showed us the Periodic Table today and golly it sure was neat!."
