InvaderThis is a good slab of early 90s sci-fi cheese.
It's not too bad in a cheesy laugh-at-it sorta way. Special Effects purists may like it because all the effects are done with miitures rather than CG. That didn't bother or impress me either way because the movie was pretty stupid for the most part.
The basic plot is that the US Air Force has been putting alien technology into a new experimental fighter. However, the programming for the new technology seems to have a viral mind of it's own. The technology comes from a crashed UFO which also seems to be able to mind control some of the soldiers and officers at the AF base where all of this is occuring. It's up to n Air Force general and sorta captain and a tabloid reporter to stop the UFO from taking over the US and launching an attack against Russia and China.
To be brief, this is a pretty stupid movie. Story wise, it seems to lurch from scene to scene; so much so that at one point I'd lost track of tme and wasn't really sure how far into the movie, story-wise, I'd come. The acting is pretty low grade with most of the actors having been in nothing before or since. A lo of the character motivations and actions just plain make no sense, especially by the military men, who seem to do things and say things for no logical reason but simply to move the story along.
I suppose somewhere in there is a cool idea about the military adapting alien technology only to have it turn on them, but this execution of that idea is pretty bad.
However, I won't say I didn't enjoy it. It was cheesy, stupid, sci-fi fun with UFO, mid controlled soldiers, etc.. If that's our thng, go for it. It also, to it's credit, never gets bogged down. It moves at a brisk clip so at least the viewer doesn't get bored. Too many low budget (and this is really low budget) movies seem to get stuck trying to pad out the story to fill time. This one has the opposite problem, too many scenes and not enough film stock to put them on. This means that while it's confusing, it's not slow
