I highly recommend that you get your hands on a copy of this newly released cult classic. This movie should be as famous (or infamous) as THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT and I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE. However, for some reason, I DRINK YOUR BLOOD hasn't quite achieved the cult status of the 3 movies I just mentioned.
The DVD (which I bought for $11.98) includes 2 versions of the film. The uncensored version (which got an "X" rating for violence from the MPAA) and the theatrical release version.
There are a surprising number of neat extras, including interviews with director David Durston (who is now in his 80s!) and some cast members, a clip from the "Cult Movies Awards" (which looked like a pretty lame event . . . they held it in a meeting room at a Marriott Hotel, and there were only about a dozen people in the audience . . . probably all employess of "Cult Movies" Magazine), trailers for THE BEYOND, CAT IN THE BRAIN, CANNIBAL FEROX, a few other gore films, and some really cheesy Italian crime movies from the 1970s, in-depth notes about the careers of Jerry Gross and David Durston, deleted scenes, plus a few more surprises! And you can own it all for about twelve bucks!
WARNING - I AM ABOUT TO DISCUSS THE PLOT AND SOME KEY SCENES, SO YOU MAY NOT WANT TO PEEK IF YOU THINK THIS WILL SPOIL THE MOVIE FOR YOU!
The plot involves a group of hippie devil worshippers in a small town who eat meat pies contaminated with a rabid dog's blood. They all go insane and start killing and contaminating other people. Weapons of death and violence include axes, machetes, guns, swords, and even an electric carving knife! There are stabbings, hangings, decapitations, and dismemberments. In the most tasteless scene, a pregnant woman stabs herself in the stomach with a sharp wooden stake. This is a fast-past, very enjoyable gore film. It might not seem excessively violent by today's standards, but it must have been pretty shocking to audiences in 1971. Worth watching over and over again.
