well in between work, school, and a squeezed in social life (which suffers because of the aforementioned) i finally got to catch a couple films this week:
1. Rabid, directed by the legendary David Cronenberg.
i finally caught this after many years of research about David's past films. overall it's a well-made horror film for it's time period, and of course there's no gripe about seeing Marilyn Chambers prance around in the nude. the commentary was very interesting. Cronenberg talks about many of the same themes he has re-visited in later work, his obsession with viruses, technology, micro-societies, and how the uproar of military law in Quebec circa 70's era influenced some of the events in Rabid. very interesting.
2. the Zero Effect.
i picked this up on a used dvd for only 10$. i've always liked this film a lot, and feel it went really underappreciated. Bill Pullman and Ben Stiller Star. Pullman plays an asocial, deviant, private detective, Stiller his quirky representative. they take on a case that draws Pullman's estranged character in emotionally, changing his outlook on life. Pullman and Stiller are great on the screen together, their charisma and humor seems to complimenet eachother's very well. the dialogue is top notch and sounds sort of "sing-songy" at times. the film has a very discreet dry humor, but it's very witty and funny if you dig that kind of thing. also the love scenes are extremely well shot, and very sexy, erotic, and classy.
if you're into film noirs you will definitely noticed a lot of odes and similarities this film has to many old noirs.
but if you're looking for something, smart, witty, well-made, and mysterious, i'd higly recommend the Zero Effect.
