Women In Fury (1984)

This is not a statement I make lightly. Having seen numerous 'women in prison' movies, some of which make you desire to not see another too soon, I can say that after having watched WOMEN IN FURY I have seen one of the best if not the best WIP flick I have ever seen.

WOMEN IN FURY has the standard fare we look for in WIP flicks: sadism, lesbian scenes, interrogation by firehose, prison riot, escape, and good doses of nudity (obviously I am speaking to the male audience, my apologies to the ladies). WOMEN IN FURY ups the ante by adding a good story to the mix and maintaining a well paced build-up in the first half that appropriately turns into an action movie in the second half. When the movie was over, it did not feel like it took ninety minutes.

WOMEN IN FURY begins with telling us this is the true story (no doubt embellished) of Angela Duvall who is imprisoned for the murder of a drug dealer. The first night her cellmates take no time at all to rip her clothes off, beat her with wet towels, and have their way with her. After which she is in the infirmary talking in a dazed state where the doctor overhears her and comes to believe that she is innocent.

The good doctor is investigating the circumstances of the shooting of the dealer outside the prison while a conspiracy looms within the prison to kill Angela. The doctor butts heads with the prison captain while Angela recovers from one attack after another and succombs to another's advances for her own safety while another is plotting to kill her in an attempt that sets this movie into high gear.

WOMEN IN FURY is a Brazilian made movie with excellent production values only slightly marred by an occasional bad dub or cheap effect. WOMEN IN FURY succeeds at delivering a good story, maintaining a crisp pace, and delivers a healthy amount of what is expected from a WIP flick.

WOMEN IN FURY is available on a Shriek Show DVD.
