The Devil's Partner (1958)
*Note: Most sites, including IMDB, list the year for this movie as 1962 which is when a shorter version of it was released to the drive-in circuits. The movie carries a date of 1958.
THE DEVIL'S PARTNER or DEVIL'S PARTNER begins with old Pete the hermit carrying a goat into his shack. He then kills the goat and smears it's blood inside a hexagon he has drawn on the floor. He writes something on an animal skin he places in the hexagon and performs a ritual. A strange hand reaches in a removes the feather pen from Pete's hand. Pete dies.
A young stranger gets off a bus which has just pulled into town. His name is Nick and he is Pete's nephew here to see his uncle who has sent him a letter telling him he is not well. While Nick is in town, myserious deaths begin to happen. Does Nick have something to do with this, and what is Nick's association with Pete?
THE DEVIL'S PARTNER does suffer from an obvious plot, but that still does not prevent this from being an enjoyable black and white 50's horror movie of the type many of us have seen on late night TV. Rather than having to figure out the mystery, we get to see the characters figure out what is happening.
THE DEVIL'S PARTNER features character actor Ed Nelson as Nick (Ed has been in PEYTON PLACE on TV and AIRPORT 1975, among others, in the movies). Edgar Buchanon (Uncle Joe on TV's PETTICOAT JUNCTION) also stars as Doc Lucas. I guess with all the goats around Pete's shack you could call it 'Billy Goat Junction' (I think someone just informed me that I'm number one with them).
THE DEVIL'S PARTNER is in black & white and has a runtime of 73 minutes. It is available from Sinister Cinema or from Alpha Video (oldies.com) on DVD for a much lower price. Alpha Video products can be purchased from many retailers.
