Bare Behind Bars (1987)

BARE BEHIND BARS is a Brazilian made women in prison flick. The basic plot, if you could call it that, revolves around three inmates organizing an escape from prison. There are some subplots, but any attempt at a plot or subplot is basically to have something to put between scenes of showers, lesbians, beatings, more lesbians, excessive nudity, and even a male/female hardcore sex scene.

Rather than deliver the fare that is associated with WIP flicks, that is all that BARE BEHIND BARS is. There is certainly humor, but mostly unintentional, I guess. There is no shortage of dumb reasons for the women in this movie to get naked or make out (I am being courteous). There is unfortunately a shortage of any good direction (I said direction, not that other word) as scenes are just there with no emphasis or build-up.

The humor in BARE BEHIND BARS falls mostly into the category of bad moves. One scene has the warden and a buyer for a girl (both women) looking through a peephole that has an amazing ability to zoom and move with the girl. The warden and her guards mostly walk around with their uniform shirts unbuttoned while the nurse is a complete ditz (like the warden is not) who is mostly interested in her inmate lover.

BARE BEHIND BARS offers nothing that can't be found in just plain cheap porn, except for the price of $24.95 for an import DVD.

I have been reviewing several WIP flicks over the past several weeks. In what I have reviewed, the following are my recommendations based on what they have to offer and their price, both of which can be had on DVD for $10 or less:

ESCAPE FROM HELL which delivers sleaze with a very basic plot, and pretends to be nothing else.

WOMEN IN FURY which is simply the best WIP flick I have seen. This delivers what is expected from WIP flicks but then adds a good story, a crisp pace, and an action filled climax with good direction and excellent picture quality.

If you can find it, you might want to check out Nightmare in Badham County (1976). It was a TV movie, but they filmed extra scenes of nudity for the European release and that's the version that occasionally gets aired on the pay channels. It's also supposed to be available on tape.

Deborah Raffin and Lynne Moody are driving cross country when they manage to p**s off the sheriff of a small southern town. Faster than you can say "corrupt legal system", the girls are railroaded into the county work farm. Of course since Raffin is white, Moody is black and this is the south in the 70s, they have to be separated and bunked with their "own kind". Sadistic guards, beatings, nudity (I don't recall any from the stars), scenes of lesbianism, escape attempts, the usual stuff. No humor at all, other than possibly some unintentional laughs at the dated setting and dialog, and kind of a downer ending.

I originally saw this on late night network TV at a young age, possibly my first WIP flick, then later on one of the pay channels, where I was surprised at the various scenes they added.

I have not seen that one yet. The stars involved with it definitely makes it look interesting for a WIP flick.

I have actually been kind of WIPed out after having watched so many WIP flicks lately. After having seen SWEET SUGAR, ESCAPE FROM HELL, and WOMEN IN FURY (it doesn't get any better than this) I had for once seen three entertaining WIP flicks in a row (unusual) and thought I was on a roll. The next four movies were various levels of disappointment.

I will, no doubt, take up the WIP flicks again in a while. The sleaze factor is too enticing to pass up.

Here is a link to Videoscreams.com where they have NIGHTMARE IN BADHAM COUNTY available on VHS and DVD-R:

Thanks for the link. I'm not sure I'm that fond of the movie though. :)

There are a lot of other cool WIP titles on the page though.
