Punks not Ded sez Rich

« on: March 20, 2005, 10:58:43 PM »

Anime fans have been waiting for this movie for awhile. 10 years in production, by  Katsuhiro Otomo the director of the famous "Akria". So its hard not to compare the two. If you do, Steamboy utterly fails. If you see as a stand alone, Its a ok movie, that should have been waaaay better. So heres the plot:

The story take place in 1899 in London.Everything mechanical is powered by steam. Trains, cars, the works. Our main charater Ray Steam, Father and grandfather have made something that could give more power to machines, which is called a steamball. The grandfather wants to use it to help people, The father wants to use it for more war like means (Powering tanks and weapons). The grandfather gives it to Ray, to keep away from the father but its up to Ray who to give it to. Add to the mix the father works for a weapon sellers and the English military wants the steamball also for their own ends.

The only thing going for the movie is the animation. Hand drawn mixed in with CG. London is simply beautiful. I could see were the 10 years of working on this went. The whole theme of " science should be used for helping mankind in a more peaceful way or through weapons of war" is been done to death by others and Otomo himself but this movie seems to beat us over the head with it, making the story dull.

The charaters are dull and annoying (wait to you get a load of Scarlett who seems to be obilvious to everything around her) and the voice acters are done by some notable names like Patrick Stewart and Anna Paquin but are medicore at best.

Overall I can't really recommened this. Theirs better animation out their just look at Ghost in the Shell 2 and the story can't carry. Theirs better Anime out their.

One finally note the movie bombed at the Japanese Box office. I don't think it made as half as money it dished out to make it.

Ebert and Roper both pretty much said the same thing, about the only thing going for it is the animation.

That's really disappointing.
