Surely one of my favorite quotations from a movie, ever:

Leila: What about our relationship?

Otto: WHAT?

Leila: Our relationship!

Otto: f**k that!

Glad to see another big fan of Repo Man.  It's one of the most overlooked "good films" from the 80s.  Punk rock, Alex Cox and Punk Rock, a SF storyline and some more Punk Rock.  You just can't go wrong with those ingredients.

One of the few times I don't hate the stupid dubbing of cussing in movies shown on commerical TV is the use of "melon farmer" for "motherf**ker" in this film. It was so odd and funny on it's own, plus in a film set among the seedy types in LA it sounded like a racist dig at migrant farm workers. I always wondered if the people resonsible for the dubbing considered that, or if I'm the only oddball who read that into it. Plus you could always tell when it had been on TV recently, because people at school would start to call each other "melon farmer" for a day or two afterwards.

I love this movie, felt like someone was showing me a whole new world of movies the first time I saw it. One of the first movies I remember seeing where most of the characters were unpleasnt or unlikeable, and I got it that they were supposed to be that way. You could make a film filled with characters like that and the film could still work.

And I love mentioning this movie whenever anyone claims that Emilio Estevez never made a good movie. Yeah he peaked early careerwise, but if the other person has never seen it before, I love wondering what they'll think of it when they see it.

I actually miss seeing generic foods on the shelves now.

The more you drive, the less intelligent you are . . .
Let's do some crimes . . . Yeah, let's order sushi and, like, not pay . . .
You'd enjoy that more if you heat it up, son . . .
But you know what?  YOU'RE ALL RIGHT!!

So many many memorable lines/scenes in this one --
Ever notice that the events leading up to the discovery of the aliens in the trunk are slightly out-of-sequence?
Just part of the charm . . .

I also really liked the subtle product placement in this one.  "BEER" being on the plain white cans and such.  This one is funny, because my mom asked me about it a few years ago.  She did not know the name, but was able to describe the plot.  I happily told her what it was that she was looking for, then pulled the Anchor Bay SE box set off my reference shelf for her.  Mom watched it that night.

Miller had some of the best lines in that movie, like his whole speech about the cosmic unconsciousness (plate of shrimp), UFOs and time machines, driving and intelligence, etc.

Or the best one:

"John Wayne was a fag. I installed two-way mirrors in his pad in Brentwood, and he come to the door in a dress."

And everybody else trying to justify it: "Lots of straight guys like to watch their buddies play. I know I do."

"You find one in every car..."

"You haven't earned the right to say 'f@#k you' to me!"

I think this movie is great. This was one of the first "off the wall" movies that I saw and was immediately attached to. Nobody I knew liked it or understood it for what it was so I was looked at as kind of weird for this but I bought the movie and I've watched it too many times to count.

I thought the aliens-in-the-cartrunk storyline in Grease was much more underplayed . . .

Unfortunately too. I suspect the alien in the trunk would have been a good addition to Grease. Imagine if John and Olivia had stood behind the car and opened the trunk...zap...that's all she wrote.
