On July 20, a new space movie called Sunshine will be released in the United States..

Check out this plot..

The sun is burning out. A space ship with a crew of 8 is sent to the sun with a nuclear bomb the size of Manhatten. Their mission is to detonate this bomb inside the sun in an effort to re-ignite it.

I like space movies, but what I don't understand is why contemporary filmmakers insist on giving us space movies with preposterous plots. It's 2007 and movie going audiences are more knowledgable about space and space travel than ever before, so why are space movies getting dumber? I mean, do these filmmakers even know how big the sun is? Earth is but a speck in comparison. If you took all the planets, moons, astroids and comets in the solar system and combined them into a big ball, the sun would still be 20 times bigger. How is a bomb the size of Manhatten going to have any effect?

I hear there is even unexplained gravity on the space ship. Can someone please make a space movie where there is weightlessness inside the space ship? Or at least have a rotating centrifuge to create artificial gravity.

What really gets me is, this movie is not intended as campy silly sci-fi shlock. This is suppose to be a serious movie!

aah who knows. I haven't seen it yet. It might be good.

The plot does indeed sound stupid, but the trailer looks cool (Don't watch the newer extended trailer 'cause it pretty much gives away everything!  Luckily I stopped about halfway through.), and Danny Boyle is the fella who directed it, so it ought to be a bit interesting.  From what I've read the reactions have been mixed.

I want to know how they plan on getting the bomb inside the sun.

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.

It sounds like The Core, The Day After Tomorrow, or Armageddon all over again... Yay.

Wow I've seen a film in cinemas BEFORE it's released in the states?  That's a first!   Cheers

The movie itself is a bit odd.  I wouldn't class it anywhere near The Core or the Day After Tomorrrow: This isn't an actiony flick.

This is a long film, a slow burner if you will, much in the vein of Solaris, and to a much lesser extent similar in feel to parts of 2001.  It has a great soundtrack, a very mellow feel and, well, is quite boring for the first half of the film if you don't approach it with the right attitude.

The ending is the odd bit, and I must admit that I wasn't blown away by it, but on the whole this is one film that I'm going to purchase when it comes out.  Not copy, pirate or download, but purchase.  It needs more thought, but I'll give you the basic rundown.

Yes the sun is burning out, and a crew has been dispatched to fix the sun by taking a rather gigantic bomb and blowing it up near the sun [note how I said near, not in]  This may or may not be scientifically possible, sure, but it sounds like a good plan when they explain it.  This plot point of blowing up the sun actually fades to the background for part of this film by the by.

This is the second attempt, with the first attempt failing miserably [nobody knows what happened to it].  This of course is a plot point that will be explored in the film.

Two strong themes throughout this film is Morality and Sanity.

Like I said, it's nothing like the usual 'use bomb to fix problem' type films.  Take heart in the fact that it is directed by Danny Boyle, the rather strapping lad responsible for 28 Days Later and Trainspotting.

The visuals for this film are fantastic as well by the by.

Well worth a look if you're in a relaxed mood and open to something a little abstract.

Oh and reading a review whilst trawling for a picture to show, one reviewer noted this old joke:

There's a joke kids used to tell in Ireland (and you may have heard with other ethnicities involved) where an American is telling an Irishman, “America is the greatest country in the world! Why, we've managed to send a man to the moon!”

The Irishman responds, “Ah, but sure, that's nothin' -- here in Ireland, we're sendin' a man to the sun!”

The American goes: “That's impossible! The heat of the sun would burn him up before he got there!”

To which the Irishman says, “No, we thought of that – that's why we're sending him up at night.”

Somehow it seems inappropriate given this film, but a nice footer all the same.

Thanks, dean.  I want to like this film...I think a far-out premise handled in a "realistic" manner is something sci-fi has been lacking for a while.  Kind of like a Ray Bradbury story.  Plus, I like the director and have faith that he can handle the material.

I hope they aren't delaying the U.S. release to add more CGI action into it to get more butts in seats.  I don't want this movie to suffer from "The Great Escape" or "U-571" Syndrome...That is, the Brits are the real heroes in the story but Americans or big explosions are thrown into the mix or tacked on to get people to go to the theater.  This also applies to adding more action to U.K. movies to make them more palatable to a U.S. audience...Because, you know, we Americans just don't get character development, story, and subtlety.  Lookingup

I'm looking forward to seeing this film.

Can't be any dumber than The Core.  that film was so stupid I felt my brain cells dying as I watched it...
