Wow I've seen a film in cinemas BEFORE it's released in the states? That's a first!
The movie itself is a bit odd. I wouldn't class it anywhere near The Core or the Day After Tomorrrow: This isn't an actiony flick.
This is a long film, a slow burner if you will, much in the vein of Solaris, and to a much lesser extent similar in feel to parts of 2001. It has a great soundtrack, a very mellow feel and, well, is quite boring for the first half of the film if you don't approach it with the right attitude.
The ending is the odd bit, and I must admit that I wasn't blown away by it, but on the whole this is one film that I'm going to purchase when it comes out. Not copy, pirate or download, but purchase. It needs more thought, but I'll give you the basic rundown.
Yes the sun is burning out, and a crew has been dispatched to fix the sun by taking a rather gigantic bomb and blowing it up near the sun [note how I said near, not in] This may or may not be scientifically possible, sure, but it sounds like a good plan when they explain it. This plot point of blowing up the sun actually fades to the background for part of this film by the by.
This is the second attempt, with the first attempt failing miserably [nobody knows what happened to it]. This of course is a plot point that will be explored in the film.
Two strong themes throughout this film is Morality and Sanity.
Like I said, it's nothing like the usual 'use bomb to fix problem' type films. Take heart in the fact that it is directed by Danny Boyle, the rather strapping lad responsible for 28 Days Later and Trainspotting.
The visuals for this film are fantastic as well by the by.
Well worth a look if you're in a relaxed mood and open to something a little abstract.
Oh and reading a review whilst trawling for a picture to show, one reviewer noted this old joke:
There's a joke kids used to tell in Ireland (and you may have heard with other ethnicities involved) where an American is telling an Irishman, “America is the greatest country in the world! Why, we've managed to send a man to the moon!”
The Irishman responds, “Ah, but sure, that's nothin' -- here in Ireland, we're sendin' a man to the sun!”
The American goes: “That's impossible! The heat of the sun would burn him up before he got there!”
To which the Irishman says, “No, we thought of that – that's why we're sending him up at night.”Somehow it seems inappropriate given this film, but a nice footer all the same.
