We're all just victims of circumstance

First Men in the Moon (1964)  - A UN mission lands on the moon only to find a British flag and a note claiming the moon for Queen Victoria. Turns out an out of work playwright, his fiance, and an absent-minded scientists have been there already in 1899.

This is based on H.G. Wells story and as usual for the movies they have to work a woman into the story. How she gets to go along is kind of funny though, her husband to be had her sign over the deed to his cottage (which he fails to mention he doesn't own). The process servers show up with subpoena just as the two men are ready to take off.

The best thing about this movie is Ray Harryhausen's effects.  We got your ant guys and your giant caterpillars (although it appears those lunar caterpillar's have internal skeletons). The lunar landscape and most of the effects are quite good given when the movie was made

There's a lot of bad science (like hopping around the moon in deep sea diving suit sans the gloves).

There was also a documentary on the disc "The Harryhausen Chronicles", which covers Harry's work from the beginning (with test footage for films that never got made) all the way through Clash of the Titans. I had seen this before I believe on TCM.

It's a good way to spend a couple of hours, just to catch some of the master of stop-motiions best work.

At the Earth's Core - Doug McClure and Peter Cushing take a wild ride in a Victorian earth-boring machine and end up in Edgar Rice Burroughs Pellucidor. They first get chased by a big dino thingy with a parrots head, then they get rounded up as slaves with a bunch of underworldly humans. They are taken to the city of the Mahas(?), sort of a cross between pteradactyls and parrots only with telepathic powers.  Well next thing you know good ol' Doug is starting a rebellion.

Along they way we get to see a series of silly monsters, one looks sorta like a hippo and then my favorite, the fire belching giant toad.

Peter Cushing is ridiculously over the top as the eccentric professor and Doug McClure, well he's Doug McClure.

The best thing about this movie is Caroline Munro's skimpy wardrobe.

Both are entertaining films, but FIRST MEN IN THE MOON is the better of the two. It had a certain quality to it that I enjoyed.

AT THE EARTHS CORE was a fun film with the lava and bird creatures at the end.

I'll be watching Yankees-Red Sox this weekend, though Head of the Family did come in. . .
