I remember back in the '60s and early '70s;  if you were a TV character and you wanted to knock somebody out, you snuck up behind them and gave them a karate chop to the side of the neck.  This would result in their instantly falling unconscious.  Nobody does that anymore.

Also, back then, if a person was tied up with rope, it was incumbent upon them to struggle against the rope for the entire time they were tied up.  Nowadays, if a TV character is tied up, they just sit there helpless.

Any other stuff?

I can't think of anything at this moment, but..............................

About that chop. Actually the chop to the side of the neck wouldn't work. It might stagger them from the force, but won't knock them out. The location of the "knock out" strike is more to the back of the neck just upon the muscle that is on either side of the vertibrae of the neck. This will drop them for a little while. Their legs will buckle and they will fall to the floor.

I always liked the way cowboys (or cops, or bad guys) would crack someone in the back of the head with a pistol. This would knock them out and they would wake up a little later, rub the sore spot and be on their merry way.

Now I know most folks here have handled a few weapons and realize this could give someone a major concussion if not downright kill them.

About that karate chop thing. Captain Kirk did that a few times.

To be honest the whole fist fight thing has always been a load of crap. I 've seen grown men fight and guess what they pull hair, gouge eyes, bite, kick, hang on to each other, and roll  around a lot.

I always liked the single punch to the jaw putting someone out too

I have seen the single punch to the jaw take someone down but it's not a common occurance as it is on TV.
I also like the fighting in movies and TV and agree with you Trek, in real life not only do the fights get more dirty than you see but they also usually don't last nearly as long.
As far as things that they used to do but don't anymore...I'm kind of at a loss but I will put some time into it and see if I can come up with anything other than that they used to dress much nicer on cop shows than they do now...they also seemed to generally carry smaller guns.

I got a good one that they used to do. The bloodless bullet hole. When people would get shot  (especially on tv) most of them time they didn't even get a hole in their clothes much less any blood. .

You don't see really extended fight scenes that realistically portray the totality of a fight between two men. I'm thinking They Live! here. The fight between Roddy Piper and Keith David has got to be the longest fight scene ever filmed for a movie. I timed it at eight minutes! Compare that to the one punch knockout fights mentioned previously. It ain't no comparison.

The Keith David/Roddy Piper fight goes on for so long it get almost to the point of being boring.

Fights generally end up on the ground after the first or second punch. (unless for some reason your following rules) Depending on the intent of those involved is what determines the rest. There are no rules.................................

Roddy Piper was always a favorite. A bit annoying, but great.

I don't know about movies, but I do this all the time.

Nobody ever carries around a big boombox blasting tunes anymore.  Hey kids!  Your IPods are lame!  Ghetto blasters are where it's at!

How long was that fight scene at the end of The Quiet Man?

Another thing you don't see anymore is the two-handed Starfleet maneuver.

You know.  You join your hands, and swing upwards with your elbows LOCKED, hitting your opponent in the jaw.  OR you can swing downwards and hit him on the back of the neck, instantly KO'ing him.

You don't see the good old Judo throw either.  Grab opponent's lapels, roll onto your back, one foot into his midsection, and toss!

Don't see Dukes of Hazzard style sliding across the hood of the car anymore.

Don't see drivers doing a Rockford much anymore.

Don't have the wacka-bom-a-wacka-bom-a-wacka background music anymore.  :)

In general, less falling through walls is seen.

Overall, fewer instances of hypnosis, for any purpose.

Well, they might not have ghetto blasters (a pity), but the kids around here do find ways to make their ipods extra showy. Anybody else see teenagers walking around listening to mp3s on big honking huge home stereo headphones? They're all doing it here.

Probably gives them a nice sound, but I wonder if it kills the batteries faster. Also makes it a lot harder to hear traffic, especially when they cross the street wherever and whenever the mood strikes them.
