Image if you can, that you had never ever saw a single Horror film. Which would frighten you the most upon a first viewing? Also what was your first Horror film?

My personal picks are:

1) HALLOWEEN - It's over played on TV, but it is really creepy. The Boogeyman.

2) PSYCHO - Definately creepy. Nobody can deny.

3) TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE - Saw it for the first time about 5 years ago. Gave me a nightmare that night. Thought someone was pulling me out of bed by the leg. Started kicking.

4) WIZARD OF OZ - Depending on your age. I thought the Wicked Witch of the East was scary with the cackle through the crystal ball and the music as Margaret Hamilton rides the bike through the country side.

My very first Horror film was an old FRANKENSTEIN film where he's throwing stuff into a fire pit as the towns people approach the castle. I must have been 3-4 years old in Corning, New York.

I can't imagine life without horror films as they are pretty much what I enjoy watching.
You mentioned the Wizard of Oz and the witch...my first memory of seeing this movie when I was a little kid was that I was terrified, not of the witch, but of those damn flying monkeys. They scared the crap outta me. But I don't really consider this a horror movie so I will move on.
If I was not aware of horror movies previously and then were to see something now, what would scare me?
Zombies, vampires, demons. I think to name particular movies I would go with:
Night of the Living Dead- How could you not be scared of the undead ripping your flesh off while you are still alive?
The Entity- Ok, I don't need any demon having their way with me...well, unless she's hot.
Nosferatu (the original silent)- To this day it is still a very eerie movie and the way it was filmed just makes it pretty damn scary.

There's others I'm sure but I can't come up with them now.
My first horror movie was The Werewolf which I watched with my dad when I was about 5. One of my first blood and guts horror movies when I was a teenager was Maniac (with Joe Spinell) or it might have been the Hills Have Eyes (the memory is getting weak). Either way, from that point on, I was completely hooked.

Great topic Scott.

NOSFERATU is definately a great one, that I saw recently only about a year ago and the images are indeed creepy. Probably the best Vampire ever. My wife just saw it on TCM or AMC this month and made mention of it to me. If she liked it then you know it must be good.

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is great, but I think when I first saw it I was in a B-movie mode and found it entertainment in a fun way. If I saw it as a child it would have definately been freaked out. Showed my daughter DAWN OF THE DEAD when she was about 10 and she found it quite frightning. She didn't want to see another, but now in her late teen she likes the EVIL DEAD material and all things Zombie and even Vampires. If it's a Zombie film showing at the theater we always go together.

I agree, Nosferatu is an incredible film, and to all those who are fans, 'Shadow of a Vampire' is a must see as well [that's a great film, but not a horror exactly.]

I can't really remember my first specific horror film: I do have flashes of various Freddy Krueger moments from an early childhood, and I found Gremlins to be a fun film with a freaky ending.  Also various 80s 'apocalyptic-blood-and-guts' films which are quite violent are always great.

I do remember, however, getting freaked out listening to Jeff Wayne's Musical Version of The War of the Worlds, which my dad would listen to in the car.  It's funny looking back on it now though, since one time we went to this annual fireworks display at a nearby primary school and on the way we'd listen to War of the Worlds and whilst watching the fireworks I'd freak myself out by convincing myself that aliens were invading and the fireworks were us humans fighting back.

Maybe that's why I'm obsessed with that album...

Anyway, I think in terms of scary first horror films, you could pretty much go with anything, but my personal favourite 'freaky film-type' is Japanese spook horror films.  They may have silly effects at times compared to Hollywood films, but they seem to do the job well enough!

Slasher films haven't really spooked me out as much as ghost films [a friend of mine absolutely hates ghost films], or ones like the Exorcist, but they do have some good jumps and scares which might freak out the average newbie horror viewer.

So I guess in short, I'd say the best horror film type to show new viewers in my opinion would be the supernatural ones or the incredibly violent 80s films.  I don't mean just a little violent, but over-the-top gruesome!

Hehe, actually I can just picture members of the board testing this theory out on various people to see which type of films are scarier by tying people up A Clockwork Orange style and forcing them to watch horror film after horror film until they are completely and utterly insane.  How horrible...

The original Nightmare on Elm Street gave me bad nightmares when I was 10 years old in 1984.
When it was released, I had never seen evil personified on film as it was in Freddy Krueger.

Though I grew up watching the Kiddie Horror movies (gremlins, monster squad, 50's horror) my first horror movie that made me become an all out horror movie freak was Scream

I'd have to say Night Of The Living Dead. I still have an extremely hard time watching that movie. Especially the ending. Not only am I scared for the entire movie, but the ending p**ses me off.

The worst experience for someone that has never seen a horror film is in my opinion a zombie film where the zombies look extremely schocking real.
Movies like:
- Reanimator 1 + 2
- Zombie 2
- Return of the Living Dead 3
- Night of the Creeps
I would say that the greatest imaginable terror for mankind is the return of the decomposing dead, so movies about them must be some of the worst horror.

My first shocking experience were Barracuda, Jaws and The Elevator (especially the scene, were the security guard or technician looses his head - I was 9 and it scared the s**t out of me!).

Oh, I ment "The Lift" (1983) not "The Elevator"...

Based purely on my reaction to it (neglecting to consider age)  I would have to say Green slime was the scariest movie I ever say.  The first time I saw it I got so scared I turned the tv off.  The suspense was jsut too dreaful for my preteen mind.  Of course if I had managed to last anothe five minutes (which I did many years later) I would have laughed because they had finally revealed the monster.  I know I never would have been scared of a three foot alien with one eye if I'd seen it.....

I would follow this with The Serpent and the Rainbow.  It took me a week to decide that I had enjoyed it.

The original "Night of the Living Dead" scared the crap outta me when I was five years old. I don't really recall seeing too many horror films before that. I was traumatized for YEARS afterwards...though once I got past it, nothing ever scared me again. I guess if I was seeing a horror film for the first time as an adult...something like "Jaws" would scare me.  I'm not fond of sharks. Or spiders for that matter. So  anything with them would frighten me, I suppose.

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of course, Ibepokin.
