Sorry, I'm going to have to argue with you there, RC.

I mentioned Monty Python and so did mithrandir!

I'm surprised I'm the only one who mentioned "Sesame Street." Hugely influential. Almost everyone's seen it and was a fan at one time. No other show has dominated its genre the way SS has.

You know the world is in deep dodo when Sesame Street talks about 'incarcerated parents'.
Gilligan's island, Goonies and Godzilla information booth here!

I was tempted to add Law and Order to my list.
"The path to Heaven runs through miles of clouded Hell."

Allhallowsday, I think you've made some great picks there. All terrific shows in their own right. All are shows I've also enjoyed. That said, I don't think I'd personally have any of them on my own top 5 list. There's a big difference between shows I feel are the best and those that are personal favourites but that line sure can get blurred at times. It's almost impossible to differentiate. My top 5 best shows probably is something like this:

1) All in the Family
2) The Dick Van Dyke Show
3) The Avengers
4) The Fugitive
5) The Twilight Zone (original)

Going with favourites, it's a longer list (and particularly sci-fi, spy-fi heavy). Tough to really limit it to just 5.

1) The Outer Limits (TOS)
2) The Twilight Zone (TOS)
3) Star Trek (TOS)
4) Doctor Who (TOS)
5) The Prisoner
6) The Avengers
7) The Fugitive
8) The Wild Wild West
9) The Man From UNCLE
10) The X-Files

Honorable Mentions:

Three's Company
Bonanza
The Munsters
All in the Family
The Time Tunnel
Lost in Space
The Dick Van Dyke Show
The Andy Griffith Show
Boris Karloff's Thriller
Space: 1999
UFO
Captain Scarlet and the Mysterons
Futurama
Are You Being Served?
Fawlty Towers
Kolchak: the Night Stalker
The Invaders
Batman: the Animated Series
Justice League
All in the Family
The Addams Family
Good Times
The Jeffersons
Gilligan's Island
"This above all: To thine own self be true!"

[HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREETS

I absolutely loved the first season of HOMICIDE, though the rest of the series never quite lived up to it.
