I always thought I was the coolest of the nerds, or the nerdiest one in the cool crowd. I transferred high schools when I was a junior and was pretty much a loner, no one knew what to make of me but they didn't try to f**k with me. Later on I hung out with the punks because they were the most interesting, even though I never really liked the music.

What was your caste designation in high school?

Someone told me I was hard to classify because I had so many contradictions. It was the most flattering thing he ever said.

I hung out with the farmers, mostly. Because they were my neighbors. And they all drank and smoked weed. And liked hard rock.  What was odd is that lotsa kids liked me because I was a good artist, and made them laugh. Even most teachers liked me, because I was smart. I was even elected class president in my sophmore year! I quit because they asked some of us to select a movie for Thanksgiving movie s**t. We picked PSYCHO.
But some prissy ass girl, who was a teachers daughter, almost p**sed herself at a screening, so they showed the Beatles MAGICAL MYSTERY TOUR (ugh!) and almost all the kids in the auditorium walked out. I resigned the next day. They people talked, and the elite ruled. f**k that!

Q: Is JAMES DEAN over-rated?
If you want to view paradise . . . simply look around and view it!

^ I answered that earlier, before you edited it. I said no, I think he's good.

Got it.  Then got buried.  I am interested in everyone's opinion.

Yes.  The only movie I really like is REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE.    The other two are kind of overblown, particularly GIANT
I'm interested in what people think of him now.  I was thinking about a few of that generation of 50s bad boy trouble actors like Brando  Clift  Perkins  ...

The only film of his I've ever seen was Rebel Without A Cause and that was a long time ago. I don't recall being particularly impressed by him so based on that limited exposure, I'd have to say yes, overrated.

You guys should give EAST OF EDEN (1955) a try. I like it better than REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE.

Q: Is JAMES DEAN over-rated?

I'm on the fence with this one: his tragic early death made him an icon and his performances were good but I'm not sure if he's over or under rated. My first memory of him is seeing him in Giant, all covered in oil.

^ Creepy.

Have you ever stole anything? Be honest!
I have. I usta buy monster mags, and hide a comic book in the middle. Never got caught. I did fell real bad.
I did it about 3 times. I had to get my Famous Monsters mag, and I only had a dollar. And they had the new Captain America (Kirby!)...ah... no excuse. But otherwise... :bluesad:

I stole a Christmas tree. (Should've saved that one for the true or false thread).

I was a teenager when I stole the comic books. Christmas tree? How do you steal a Christmas tree?

If the only answer is yes or no with nothing in between, then, yes, James Dean is overrated. (I went to visit his grave in high school with some boy I knew who was into him.) Death can be a terrific career move for cool young people. Nothing wrong with his acting but had he lived longer I seriously doubt he'd have been so revered.

Have I stolen? One thing that comes to mind is as a teenager I used to walk out with library books marked adult, not in the porn sense but our library would not let people under eighteen check out certain books, mostly ones with bad language or anything sexual in nature in them at all, which included a lot of Clive Barker, Stephen King, a lot of James Joyce, No One Here Gets Out Alive, Tropic of Cancer, The Pillars of the Earth, and quite a few others I wanted to read, so I used to take them and then bring them back when I was done. I figured it was pragmatism mingled social protest against a nanny state.
