Searching for a band. They definitely exist, and I've listened to their music (so that's a start)

First album released mid to late 70s era, think they carried on way into the 80s and maybe beyond.

Style: west coast rock / soft rock / yacht rock (whatever that is). Not a million miles from The Eagles, but imo better... 4 or 5 guys in the band. Typical vocals / guitars / drums set up

From what I remember of it, The sleeve of their debut album depicts a dusk / night time scene with kind of a purple-ish sky, possibly with some mountains in the background, possibly with a truck going down a highway, but almost certain with some kind of shooting star going across the sky...

The band possibly has the words Fire or Night in their name... like Firefly, Nightfire... but not those obviously

I'm honestly surprised that I've not managed to ID this band by searching myself, so offering it up here

My first thought was Blue Oyster Cult with the Some Enchanted Evening album, but I guess they are too well known for it to be them. I'll have a search and see if I can come up with any better suggestions.

Thanks Alex... not B.O.C.

these guys also seem to have quite a devoted fanbase somewhere, because I remember skimming through quite a lot of reviews on Amazon of their albums

Bit of a longshot, but does anything on this list ring a bell?

Night Sun, Fire or Firefall? Skipping Earth, Wind & Fire from the possibilities though based on your description.

Bingo

There's the sleeve I was trying to describe. (Where the hell did I get "truck going down a highway"?)

I looked at a whole load of lists of 70s bands in my searching and gave up... haha

well it's solved now but thanks anyway, however there's no way I'd have been stuck if it was Free... Alright Now is one of the biggest rock songs ever.

I actually have a couple of albums by their spinoff band, Bad Company
