Title: Duke Nukem Forever: the bad 90s action movie you play
Post by: akiratubo on August 19, 2011, 08:50:08 PM
I was a big fan of Duke Nukem 3D back in the day, so when the price of Duke Nukem Forever finally dropped to reasonable levels ($39.99 vs. $69.99) I picked it up.

And I LOVE it.

Back in the 90s, did you watch loads of direct to video movies starring the likes of Dolph Lundgren, Lorenzo Lamas, Don Wilson, or Gary Daniels?  Well, Duke Nukem Forever perfectly replicates the feel of those types of movies, in video game form, so if you liked those kinds of movies, you'll probably like Duke Nukem Forever.  Cheesy one liners, one man taking out hordes of enemies seemingly with the sheer power of his ego (literally), useless allies who are only there to underscore how awesome the hero is, babes, monster trucks, gratuitous property damage, and buckets of testosterone.  Duke is such an exaggerated caricature it's impossible not to at least crack a smile at the absurdity of it all.  (He owns statues of himself holding the world on his back - while he's smoking a cigar - for example.)

I honestly don't understand the bad reviews this game has been getting.  The graphics look fine to me and the gameplay is very fluid and exciting.  I keep hearing that the controls are bad but I had no difficulty.  You just use four keys to move and aim with the mouse, like every other shooter I've played.  The controversial part of the game, where you go into the alien hive and see women explode after being impregnated with alien octababies, didn't bother me.  On the contrary, it just turned the game from a cheesy action movie into a cheesy horror movie for a little while.

Anyway, it's a fun game, it isn't too hard, it doesn't take too long to beat, and I got to pretend to be the most badass man in the world, who lives on the 69th floor of his own casino with his lesbian twin girlfriends when he isn't single-handedly saving the world.

I played it, and I agree with some of the reviews. My problem with it was that the enemies were too few, and I absolutely HATE it when a game makes you double-tap an enemy (Kill it, just for it to come back for you to kill it again). It's IMO a cheap way of lengthening the game. To me, it felt too much like an advertisement for the game engine rather than a game. It was a bit short, and it just felt like they were trying to use every feature of the game engine once or twice. Don't get me wrong, it was fun, but really, it didn't bring anything to the table that other games have. The weapons were blah and you could only carry two of them. Like I said, it was fun, but for me it had nothing to make it a game I would replay. When I finished it, I started playing Borderlands for the dozenth or so time.

You can change the number of weapons from two to four in the settings, at least on the PC version.  I actually prefer it with just two, makes things more interesting.

I did not know that. I still like the idea of being able to carry many weapons much better, and IMO, the weapons were rather blah. I may have become spoiled from playing Borderlands, because it excels in those two areas.

I've kind of been wanting to pick that up some day.  Way too many other games to play right now though.  I've completely stopped reading video game reviews - the last two games I played both got scores in the 5/10 range and I had a fantastic time with both of them.  Meanwhile all the highly rated games I've played recently were utterly mediocre experiences.
