Title: Little known fact about the Japanese military
Post by: Dr. Whom on January 20, 2006, 10:21:51 AM
In the fifties, they apparently had a fully equipped anti Kaiju war room, including monster models!

What I really want to know is what that piece of artillery is that looks like a satellite dish and shoots lightning bolts. Those things were always just wheeled out with the tanks and rockets as if there was nothing unusual about them.

Good point AndyC. I recall that as a kid I would always wonder where those things came from and why our military didn't have anything as cool.

The Maser Cannon!  Someone in the Japanese government must have really backed  this project toa  ridiculous degree, beyond all real-wrld untility. (ballistic missile defense anyone?)

I only remember one movie where they were at all effective.  But I cannot remember which one.

Just waiting for a kaiju attack to use them.  They don't actually seem to be designed to be much use against anything else but a very large, relatively slow moving, tough to kill target

I want a maser cannon!

But not those smaller blue lightning like beams from Godzilla X Mechagodzilla, give me the big huge energy wave ones from Mothra.

BZZAAM!

I think it might have been effective in War of the Gargantuas, although I'm not certain. In most cases, it didn't look like it accomplished anything. Maybe tickled the monsters a little.

But when I was a kid, I remember thinking it was cool. As an adult, it really seems impractical.

Oh, and don't forget, in times of crisis, a child under the age of 10 will advise all political figureheads and scientists as how to deal with the monster threat.

Certain governments act as if there were a 10 year old advising them.

There is also a 10 year old on the advisory board of every evil overlord.  He is the one who is supposed to spot the holes in any of the overlord's plans.

The "Kenny" is the secret to Japanese success in the world theatre.  There are hundrededs of short-pantsed kids advising on all world issues.

*spoilers to War of the Gargantuas*

I think they were quite effective in War of the Gargantuas. The bad green one was getting hammered really badly. They would have had him too but then the good one came and safed his brother, not realizing his twin was an evil twin.

Later on when they were fighting in Tokyo the good one would move out of the way to let the Masers get a few shots in before charging back into the fray.
