I'm travelling to New York in a few weeks, and since obscurities aren't exactly readily in demand here in Norway, I thought I'd try to find some goodies while in the states. What stores are recommended? Any stores to avoid?
I'm not too hardcore as of yet, and I'm mainly looking for 80s cheeseball action, slashers and gore.
Go to any Kim's Video store (there are a few locations-- I know there's one on St. Mark's Place and one on Washington Square). These places are PACKED with ultra-obscure music and movies, including a ton of "grey market" DVD-R's of videos that have never been officially released on VHS or DVD. The one possible snag is that, since the last time I was there, one store was raided by the RIAA (charges were eventually dropped, but a bunch of CDs and equipment were confiscared and some clerks were arrested), but I can't imagine the stores could have lost their awesomeness. Enjoy!
well, new york state or new york city? i live in new york state, and i go semi-regularlly (not even to rent movies, just to bask in the ambiance). The owner is distinctlly "one of us" i guess, though that statement sort of encourages a pretentious exclusion that just feels wrong. Anyhow, it's where i can find robot monster, draculas dog, star wars holiday special, and all sort of other goodness.
Sorry, forgot to specify. Going to NYC. Kim's Video sounds great. Thanks for the tip!
