This does not sound very far fetched to me... alot of our tech. spawned from scifi in the first place, did it not?

Science fiction spawns a lot of ideas because people can use allegories to talk about issues that would otherwise have the closeminded threatening to lynch them for leading people away from god and country. Most people like that don't have to be kept away from scifi, until someone tries to apply the concepts to "reality".
