Title: Dr. Who
Post by: raj on March 18, 2006, 06:05:51 PM
Soooo, what did everyone think about this?  (assuming you weren't out imbibing on St. Paddy's Day).
I only caught the first episode.  It was a bit annoying for me, that they had to go and set up the whole premise, but I suppose it was necessary for folks who don't know Who.  I liked it, the plastic men were cool, just hope they stay more with the characters and not rely on lots of explosions.

I would've watched it, but I was out last night (watching Flogging Molly play in Mesa, Arizona). Sci-fi really picked a horrible time to debut this already severely late series on their station. Maybe I'll just go download the entire season on bittorrent.

I found the "chase" music very annoying. Eccleston does appear to have the Doctor right though. The effects have definitely taken a step forward (you can tell the BBC actually ponied up some money). I don't know that I''m crazy about the interior design of the TARDIS.

I guess the whole last time lord thing will eventually get explained a little better.

Does anybody know the commercial free running time of an episode? It seemed there were a lot of extra commercial breaks.

Commercial free, "Rose" runs for (approx) 42:50 while "The End of the World" clocks in at about the same, give or take a few seconds and compensating for "last time" and "next time" footage.

And that "last Time Lord" thing does get explained, though I'm still not sure if I'm happy about it.

having seen the whole series about a month ago, i can attest that the series gets better with each episode. the next one to air should be "the unquiet dead", which is quite a good throwback to the gothic tom baker episodes.

Yeah this series with Eccleston will be on R1 DVD sometime in July, I think they said on the advertisement. I'm really digging this series so far. As far as the interior of the TARDIS, if you saw that mediocre Fox tv-movie where Sylvester McCoy regenerated into Paul McGann (great actor, but the writing was really bad), the Doctor had redecorated.

imdb has info about the series two episodes that have gone into production, in some way or another.

*SPOILER ALERT*

i don't know how to feel about k9 coming back. he's a bit of a lazy writer's solution to seemingly impossible situations.

Having caught, so far, only one episode of the program, while I was in Vancourver (B.C.), I thought Eccleston was the perfect Dr. Who for the 21st century. I thought the strengths of the program, at least in the one episode I saw, was the acting and writing. What I did not care for, was the SFX.

why? were they too good compared to the oldschool ones, or were they not good enough compared to contemporary programs?

Well at least the TARDIS still disappears with a fade-out.

I finally watched some of this and it was definitely true to form.   But it didn';t do a lot for me.  I guess i"m just not 12 any more.

the series really does get better, especially starting with the sixth episode, "dalek".

(just to note, episode 4 will air this friday, and it's the first half of a two parter, featuring a story that comes back into play in episode 11.)

What you said reminds me of my cousin (4 years older than me). In the '80s he was a complete Dr. Who freak. Now he isn't even into anything. While at that same time, I was a casual Dr. Who fan who liked the series for what it was and for good entertainment. Nowadays, I'm still a casual Dr. Who fan.

I watched it on Friday, and it was really fun. I can't wait for this next Friday, because then the two parter will be back to back.

My son came home for his birthday and brought me the whole series and the Christmas Special with the new Doctor (David Tennant).

I liked Eccleston's portrayal and it ranks right up there with the best (Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, and Peter Davison). Tennant is definitely different, much more hyper and he appears to be a more physical Doctor (like Pertwee). Of course, the Doctor is usually stranger than usual for a while after a regeneration.

I think Davies has done an excellent job of reviving the series.

Now I don't know if this is true or not, but I heard that Tennant might be leaving the show after production is finished on a 3rd series. What is up with these actors? Now I realize that they are afraid of being typecast or that playing 'The Doctor' will overshadow their careers, but come on. Peter Davison is a good example of an actor who's played 'The Doctor', but is just as famous and recognized for the other roles he's played over the years - namely Tristan on 'All Creatures Great & Small', as well as a multitude of other shows, miniseries, and movies.

personally, i'm sort of fond of the idea of seeing a new doctor in each season. i think danny john jules, better known as "cat" from red dwarf, would make a great doctor. could we also see a female doctor? might be nice. so far they've all been white males...

Well , Tennant is number 10 and having established before that the Time Lords could regenerate 12 times that only leaves three more unless he takes to stealing bodies like the Master.

Yeah. I was thinking about that the other day. Would The Doctor resort to stealing bodies? Personally, I don't think he would.

I remember hearing some 'talk' about there being a female doctor in the next series but I think it's a little wierd and silly, though 'Cat' from Red Dwarf would be a great choice.

I can actually picture the Doctor grooming a replacement rather than just an accomplice, to carry on his affairs.  Though I'm not sure if it'll be as fun.

The talk of a female doctor, if I remember correctly, has been circulating since the '80s. Personally, it wouldn't work. There were already female time travelers. Sure something has happened in the back story of the new series where the Doctor says his planet is gone, but I'm sure there are some Time Lords out there lost just like him.

how much you wanna' wager that they're going to throw that whole concept right out the window?

K-9 and Sarah Jane Smith will both be returning in the next season, juding from the preview at the end of last season's finale. It should be interesting, particularly with Anthony Head as the episode's villain.

this week's episode should be "dalek", which is quite a good one.
