Anyone see Slither yet? Not a bad flick, I had fun watching the damn thing!! I would rather pay to see that than Sharon Stone's new garbage!!! (or old garbage...hehehe)
Planning to see it later today or tomorrow.
Ahhh!
I checked localmovies.com, and the only place that it is showing....is 2hrs away from me!!!! My wife and I decided to skip on Slither tthis weekend and hope it comes to a closer theater next weekend...that is if it makes any bank this wkend
Definitely on the 'to be watched list'
It's on my watch list as well.
I have to say that I was a bit disappointed by Slither.
It was lacking something that I just couldn't put my finger on.
It definitely had some good moments that made me laugh but the movie as a whole just seemed kinda ho-hum.
Ebert gave the film 2 out of 4 stars and I have to agree with him here.
His review is spot on.
READ IT HERE (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060330/REVIEWS/603300307)
It also takes what seemed like an eternity to really get going.
The best parts by far in my opinion were of Michael Rooker when he's halfway transformed.
He's a gruesome sight to behold.
The locals call him the "Squid" and even have squid cutouts on the big police map where he's been sighted.
As for the gore...yes, it's gory, but not anything like I imagined it would be.
Dead Alive has about a thousand times more gory scenes than this one did.
Also, the movie is VERY dark. Most of it takes place at night and I had to squint a few times to make things out.
What I liked best about it was the redneck hick town setting.
It kind of had the same feel as Critters did...being set in a rural area and all.
I also give this film 2 out of 4 stars.
Definitely worth a DVD rental when it comes out or a $5 matinee in its theatrical run.
Well, looks like I won't be seeing this one until it's on DVD. I was hoping it'd be number 1 this weekend and make it's way into my local theaters. It only made 3.6 Mil!!!!
Me sad.....
All I can say is Starla! Starla! Starla!
Just because a movie doesn't make big box office ( there were like 3 other people in the theater with my son and I) is not reason to write it off. It wasn't fall down funny, but it filled the bill for a fun flick. I think you guys are way too critical sometimes. This was an R rated movie, so the tweens and the teens couldn't get in by themselves. I'd look for it to do very good on DVD.
I didn't mean to say it was bad.
It wasn't bad...but it wasn't awesome either.
It was somewhere in between.
I think a second viewing when it comes out on DVD might make it better.
Was this movie anything like Shivers (AKA They Came From Within), or Night of the Creeps, or Slugs? Did pay any homage to any of them?
I heard Night of the Creeps is homaged, though I haven't actually seen either movie.
Yea, it looks like SLITHER might be pretty good. Like NIGHT OF THE CREEPS and SHIVERS.
As I've said, I haven't seen the movie so I can't be sure...but I don't think that Night Of The Creeps is homaged in the film.
I was reading an interview recently with James Gunn and Night Of The Creeps (NOTC) was brought up. Gunn said that after most people screened Slither, they came up to him and asked hif NOTC was an influcence. Apparently not, since Gunn had never seen NOTC.
After having his film compared to NOTC so much, he finally saw NOTC. He said that he was quite upset because it does look like his film is a rip-off of NOTC eventhough he claims he hadn't seen it at the time.
I don't really care if Gunn had or hadn't seen it. If it is anything even remotely as good as NOTC then it will be a masterpiece.
Slither takes parts from the Blob, John Carpenter's The Thing, Night of the Creeps, a little bit of Alien, and then you have Zombies (kinda) thrown into the the mix.
This movie is intended to be a comedy and has it's surprislingly funny moments (the kind that make you wonder why you're laughing at something so gross). I thought it was pretty entertaining. Nathan Fillion does a good job as the police chief of a hick town. Gregg Henry plays the mayor and gets a majority of the funny lines. Michael Rooker ... well you'll see what happens to him.
!!!!SPOILERS BELOW!!!!
See, I didn't think it was totally intended to be a comedy.
Giving us the flashbacks scenes of the alien races this "being" has conquered on other planets was intended to give us a sense of how hostile "he and his slug cohorts" really are.
They are a force to be reckoned with!
He's been around for a million years! He destroys entire worlds! He has never been defeated!
That denotes a real sense of seriousness which I perceived while watching Slither.
This thing is a threat that will take over the entire f**king planet!
This film wants you to laugh at it and at the same time, fear what could happen if the invasion were left unchecked..
Slither struggled to inject comedy with a serious alien threat and it somewhat failed and succeded simultaneously.
That's why I gave it 2 stars and agreed with Ebert.

I think that's probably exactly why it's meant to be funny: a slug is a conquerer of worlds, fear him!!!
Sounds pretty funny to me...
Hey Ash, the main message of the movie was love can conquer any Thing.
Skaboi, Gunn may not have meant to homage Night of the Creeps, but he unintentionally did.
I just saw it and I think it was just intetened to be a great entertaining "Alien/Zombie from Outer Space" all gift wrapped in a slimey package.
I had a really good time.
I think it only paid homage in just a little way. I really liked Slither. My husband, friend and I were the only people in the theater, and it was great. I loved the Mayor. And the Rook. hehehe.
And the deer. I bet he understands NOW why someone would want to blow a cute lil deer's face off. *LOL*
From the previews the movie looked like it was going to about a woman's husband turning into a monster then the town was going to split in two, one side for killing the monster man, the other for letting it live and continuing with it's marriage.
Even then the movie sounded pretty entertaining.

I really love this movie. I think that the man who wrote and directed it had the perfect idea of a how to make a small scale (but spiralling larger very quickly) alien invasive invasion film. There's a review forthcoming; going to post it just before Valentine's Day.

Yeah this is a great throw-back movie to the 80's horror flicks. I guess you could call it an homage but it does stand on it's own. I wish this would have made more money so we could see either a sequel or something else from this director.
I posted a review of this film elsewhere around the time of the DVD release. I figured I'd send it over to James Gunn (the director) as I had some of his contact information. Gunn was kind enough to reply back to me and to talk a little about Slither.
Sadly my email backups were lost and I have formatted my PC since then. I do recall a bit of the conversation.
James said that he was displeased with the box office earnings of Slither, but who wouldn't be? He did say that on the other hand, he couldn't have been happier at the way that the final film turned out. He then went on to say that he would love to keep making these types of films if he is able to.
I've spoken to Gunn a few times since that original correspondence but nothing more than a "Hey, how you doing?" type of thing. Gunn is really a great guy and he has written some superb and often very witty films: Tromeo And Juliet, The Specials, Dawn Of The Dead ('04).
