Disclaimer: Don't try this at home; I've been a chemist, doing demo's like this, for 20 years.

We can go one step further with sugar-oxidizer fuels.  A demonstration I've done many times based on the sugar-chlorate mixture (not perchlorate, as used in this fuel) is hypogolic with sulfuric acid.  This means they combust (or even explode) upon contact.

I once gave a talk on Forensic Chemistry; before I started the talk, I set this up with the sulfuric acid in a capsule that would take about 30 minutes to dissolve.  About five seconds after I put the slide up on arson investigations, the sulfuric got through the capsule, the reaction started, and I had flames shooting about 6 ft off the desk.

Beautiful.

I'm all for practical demonstrations.  In bioloy the demonstration options are much les impressive.
