Comics artist Alex Toth dies at 77
BURBANK, Calif. (AP) - The classic comic and cartoon artist
behind "Space Ghost" and "Jonny Quest" has died at his home in
California.
Alex Toth was 77 years old. His son says he died while sitting
at his drawing table.
The cause of his death last month has not been determined, but
his son says Toth had been in failing health for years.
As an artist for Hanna Barbera in the 1960's and 1970's, Toth
designed characters for adventure cartoons that included "The
Superfriends" and "Space Ghost." He was widely respected for his
subtle way of bringing a complex print character like Superman to
life in animated form.
He was also known as a bit of a maverick, who stuck to his
artistic principles. He also preferred pirate tales and westerns
over the more popular superhero comics.
At the artist's request, no memorial service is planned.
Wow, Johnny Quest. I was just thinking about that a couple of days ago.
RIP.
