VAMPYR (1932) (http://imdb.com/title/tt0023649/) - Excellent French/German horror film that is just as good as NOSFERATU (1922) and DRACULA (1931) in it's own way. It is a talking picture, but still has a lot of silent film feel to it. Unique cinematography for back then with the shadow figures. You'll like this one. Check it out. I think this was on TV a few weeks ago, since it seems very familiar, but I only caught parts of it and not the whole film [was at a friends place at the time]
****Spoilers:
Is this the one which ends with the main vampire taking the 'good looks' of the main female character and then trys to trick the protaganist into killing who he thought was the evil vampire/witch, but was really his girlfriend/wife? I wish I could be more specific, but I can't really!
If so that's the one I watched part of, which was pretty interesting and pretty good, but I missed quite a bit, including most of the start. Though I caught the end...

No definitely not VAMPYR. It sounds more like you are describing BLACK SUNDAY.
The most amazing scene for me in VAMPYR is the "out of body experience" and the way the shadows detatch themselves and move about on there own. There are a ton of great visuals in VAMPYR!
Yup it most definitely is Black Sunday, thanks! I had a feeling I was on the wrong track with Vampyr.
Though after reading Scott's description, Vampyr sounds right up my alley!
"Vampyr" a great movie, and I believe the director shot part of the film through a gauze screen.
And trying not to give anything away, but the old doctor's fate in the film, while not bloody, is one of the most horrifying things I've seen in a film.
