Title: Hecho en Mexico.
Post by: Neville on June 21, 2006, 11:46:38 AM
Touring again in cineCutre, one of the best Spanish bad movie resources, I noticed a section showing Mexican B-movies. It's hard to find any of those here, but next time you end up drunk in Tijuana, think of it and grab a few of them. The titles and covers are enough to wake you up from any mezcal induced paranoia:

Oh, don't bother about the last ones, those are Mexican covers for "foreign" movies.

'm tempted to find out if "Metralla en Tijuana" (that's "Shrapnel in Tijuana" for those of you who live far away from Rio Grande) or "Cementerio de Cholos*" are available in my country. That Steven Seagal wannabe on the cover holding a toy gun is very appealing.

And those guacamole-westerns look funny as Hell, too.

* Don't ask me what "Cholo" means, I have no clue. But, as they say in CineCutre, if a regular cemetary is scary enough, a Cholo's cemetary must be the bomb.

Wasn't Cholo one of the bounty hunters in Domino?

Could be, but I think it's also a Mexican slang word. In movies, I'm sure I've heard it before but in so many different contexts I still don't get it. For instance, in Carpenter's "Assault to police precint 13" some of the prisoners stuck inside the precint call the blood oath the gangmembers have done a cholo. Either that or he calls them cholos, which would make more sense.

EDITED: Wait, got it. Ain't Wikipedia great?

The bounty hunter in Domino was called Choko, although it was spelled differently...

Cholo,I believe,is a word used by Mexicans to describe backwood  folks in a bad way... like calling a southerner a stupid inbred hillbilly.(I work in a canning factory for about 18 years now,and during asparagus and cherry season the factory hires a LOT of mexicans on a seasonal basis, so I catch on to a lot of slang and not so nice terms.

So 'cholo' is what a Mexican calls a redneck?
