I ran across this site (http://qntm.org/destroy) today, and strangely found it a lot of fun to read. Note also there is a page for "Geocide in Fiction." (Nice to see DARK STAR and PLAN 9 made his list).
So, how many ridiculous ways to destroy the earth have been seen in other Bad Movies?
Ahhh yes, destroying the Earth. A favorite plot of screenwriters and novelists. I have seen the Earth destroyed so many times in so many books and movies, I've lost count. In all of them, there are 3 forces which destroy the Earth: Man, Aliens or Nature. When Man destroys the Earth, its usually out of ignorance. When Aliens destroy the Earth its because Mankind refuses to submit, out of fear (such as in Titan AE) or ignorance. When Nature destroys the Earth, its usually with asteroids, comets, black holes, dust clouds, The sun running through its natural life cycle and incinerating the Earth, the sun going supernova or some unstabilized process within the Earth itself.
"You humans are stupid! STUPID,STUPID,STUPID!" Would destroying the earth mean as unlivable for humans or totally blown up? If it were taken over by Frogs, for example,or zombies? If Godzilla and his pals killed all humans,it would kinda wreck it for us-but giant monsters would consider it a better place.Little 6 year old kids would enjoy it,too.

The site to which I linked deals specifically with destruction of the planet Earth - making it no longer a planet. The author defines his criteria. Making it unlivable or altering the environment does not qualify.
That's not say that lesser forms of 'destruction' won't make good conversation or have not been the topic of bad movies.
I have to say that that website is extremely professional in its diagnosis of methods for destroying the world. I was particularly taken aback by their very thorough "International Earth-Destruction Advisory Board" which meticulously tracks the Earth's status of not being destroyed. They claim to take constant scientific readings which all work to either confirm or deny that the Earth has been destroyed. Heck, you caneven contribute yourself by looking out the window for the moon. After all, there is no such thing as bad data! Particularly interesting is their method for relaying the information that the Earth has in fact been destroyed. You can check into their site for constant updates, you can join their mailing list, or you can put a little pop up on your desktop that constantly updates with new information about the Earth either being destoyed or not being destroyed.
Overall, this has become my favorite site.
