Just got finished watching a film titled "Annnnnd Cut" that was filmed rather close to me in Winston Salem, NC. Anybody else caught this flick? Pretty good cheesy film about a failed actor who goes out to kill more successful actors that got the roles he had tried out for. Half the fun for me was noticing some of the locations they shot in.
Anybody else have an experience with watching a film shot in or around where you live?
Update: The only clip or mention of the film I can find is over at indieflix, where they have a small clip up.
http://www.indieflix.com/FilmDetail.aspx?tid=4292
They also have one over at Youtube which was what pushed me over the edge to buy the film anyway. Good classic dodgy acting.

Cloudio,
I think I stumbled across "Annnd Cut" either by accident on the web or it was submitted to some film festival here in NC. It is bad bad bad. Just a quick example of how bad it is outside of acting, directing, script and camera work (oh and lighting) in the clip you've posted above of the lead actor killing the bald guy, you can hear and see the lead actor's foot sticking to the kitchen's linoleum floor because of the sugar in the Karo Syrup they used for blood. This defines no budget and scoffs at professionalism. Foley artist anybody?
As for films made in and around where I live currently? Well, somewhere in these thar hills of Boone, North Carolina, Sam Raimi made Evil Dead and Evil Dead II. There are also plenty of car commercials that use the Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway to speed their latest deuce and a half trucks over. Back home in Greensboro there aren't many big budgetted films that pass through, but I see my fair share of painful indie films trying to depict Greensboro successfully. It is cool though in Asheville there is a studio called Blue Ridge Motion Pictures that I frequently visit where I can see the latest sets. They have a set for the Oval Office that is supposedly a true mock up if the real thing. I have a picture of myself sitting in the President's chair. Hehe. I guess it's kind of the same thing to see yourself on a movie set.
Probably the biggest brush with a "big" film coming through Winston was Hellraiser 3 (yes THAT Hellraiser film) which was filmed on campus at Wake Forest University. I've heard that they even have a small piece that mentions the film. I am almost sure it was the scene that took place in the construction area.
Glad you mentioned the foot sticking to the floor in Annd Cut, I noticed it as well the first viewing through but nobody else seemed to though it was painfully loud. You should try to finish watching the film, its good in that god-awful bad type of way to me at least.
I'll also have to check out the place you mentioned in Asheville.
Cloudio,
Good to have some more people from NC on here.
As for local movies.....the only one that springs to mind is the Buddy Cooper slasher flick The Mutilator AKA Fall Break. Great little piece of 80s horror that was filmed a few minutes away from me in Atlantic Beach.
Skaboi, wasn't Maximum Overdrive filmed in Wilmington? For some reason I was thinking you were close to Wilmington.
I also completely forgot Cabin Fever which was filmed partially here in Winston and a good deal in the woods of Mt. Airy.
It is hard to forget due to the fact my friends father was approached by a film crew and asked if he wanted to have a small background role in the film, to which he promptly turned them down thinking they were just kids messing around. He may or may not have cursed at them heavily.
I grew up in Franklin, NC, and there were numerous movies shot (or partially shot) in the area.
One was GRIZZLY (1976) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0074593/), a Jaws-as-a-bear movie shot in nearby Dillard, GA. The crew stayed at a little resort called Sky Valley where my Mom was the dining room manager.
One scene, considered at the time as a direct rip from Jaws, had a naked girl bathing under a waterfall before being attacked by the bear. That waterfall is a rather famous one in the area.
Next was THE FOUR SEASONS (1981) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0082405/) starring Carol Burnett and Alan Alda. The Fall scene was likewise shot around Sky Valley. I got autographed pictures of Burnett and Alda.
NELL (1994) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110638/) was shot almost in its entirety in Robbinsville, NC (about an hour from Franklin), but one scene was filmed at Angel Community Hospital in Franklin. Both my parents and I have been patients there; I saw NELL at the theatre in Franklin, and also in the audience were some of the nurse extras who yelled out in great celebration at their scene (it was pretty cool to have people IN the movie in the audience) ... it was the scene in which Nell is being rushed into the hospital.
The second act of ROCKIN' ROAD TRIP (1985) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0110638/) by Troma took place in Hickory, NC, and I believe it was filmed there. I've got it on VHS (taped from Up All Night) around here somewhere; my favorite bit character is Looney Leanard, the gun dealer.
Finally, some of the 'country' scenes of THE FUGITIVE were likewise filmed around Hickory.
The mountains of western North Carolina are probably used for a LOT of stock shots - I see a lot of mountain scenes that look mighty familiar.
If you may or may not know, North Carolina is America's third largest film producing state. Next to California and New York, North Carolina boasts a large number of studio hubs, film schools, festivals, theaters, and professional and non-professional filmmakers alike. In my opinion, this has to do with North Carolina's unique geographic feature of having the three major filming landscapes:
Beach
Mountains
Piedmont (area between mountains and beach)
You can find these same features in New York with its Adirondacks and Atlantic Ocean in the same state, plus a cultural mecca, the self-proclaimed capital of the world, New York City. California has State Parks, The Sierra Nevada, the Pacific Ocean, and sun almost year round (which is why filmmaking came to California in the first place. Before electric lights were used in filmmaking, filmmakers relied on the strength of the sun to illuminate their movie. And when they discovered that California, particularly LA, had such constant year-round sun, they found a home)
North Carolina is also a right-to-work state and has great tax incentives for film companies spending $250,000 or more while in the state.
I lived in Rock Hill, SC while THE PATRIOT was being filmed in McConnells (same county). All the crew stayed in Rock Hill, and I even pulled over a truck load one day for something or other, and worked the burglary scene where the warehouse they were using was broken into.
Never met Mel, but everybody and their brother had a "Mel Sighting' story to tell...I think 95% + of these were not true.
Ulthar,
Maximum Overdrive! Man, I had forgotten all about that one! I've actually been to the studio there numerous times. At the time of Maximum Overdrive, I think it was DMG Studios then. I've only been there in the years since Screen Gems has taken over.
I'm actually a bit of a ways from Wilmington. It's about 3 hrs away or so. I actually live in the Atlantic Beach/Morehead City/Beaufort area, if you're familiar with any of that.
Now that I think about it, there were a few more films made partially here. Domestic Disturbance w/ Travolta was partially filmed in Morehead City and A Walk To Remember was partially filmed in Beaufort. As a matter of fact, A Walk To Remember was set in Beaufort...well the book anyway. The film ended up being set in Wilmington eventhough Nicholas Sparks is from New Bern.
There was another film called Alligator Eyes from 1990 or so that was filmed in Sealevel, Atlantic, and Portsmouth Island. Sealevel is the town next to mine, just about 5 miles away. As a matter of fact, I went to elementary and middle school in Atlantic. But, unfortuantly, the film sucked.

I've been there once; I spent some time on Emerald Ilse, the other end of the island from Atlantic Beach. Walked through Morehead City and Beaufort.
I'm planning to head that way again; perhaps next summer.

I thought you were a chemist/teacher.
Now you're a cop?
I thought Ulthar was a crime scene investigator!
Ulthar, man by day, mystery by night. Woosh.

Ulthar the Magnificent! He dons his cape to do battle with the evil doers of Lugoff!
Anyway back on topic, the last big budget film I remember blowing past here was Ghostrider with Nicholas Cage. I was vaguely hopeful of it being a good film, but after watching the trailer and talking with some people who worked on the film I have decided it is going to be pretty sub-par. Though hopefully we'll pick up some cooler films here soon! We get one worth noting everynow and then.
Other than that it would probably be the occasional telemovie and lots of ads and local material. This is all recently of course.

My 'main' occupation for 20 years has been a chemist; part of that time was research/teaching and part of it was running a forensic laboratory for a law enforcement agency. While doing the latter, I was a certified 'cop,' and drove a marked vehicle (someone's brilliant idea to increase police visibility). Since my vehicle was all marked up, if someone committed a flagrant traffic offense in front of me, I was obligated to pull them over.
During that time, I also worked crime scenes, a responsibility given in part due to my past experience as a firefighter/fire investigator (done volunteer while in school to become a chemist). So, I was 'chemist' by day, CSI by night, sort of.
I now own my own consulting/research business. I do a variety of things for a variety of clients. Some of it does not even sound like chemistry at first description.
Hope this helps clear up my work history for you.

Ah, see, there I have you. I have not done ANY of that since moving to my present town. I'm a complete and total nobody here....persona non grata. There are probably not 10 people here that know me. And I've lived here several years.
And THAT is part of the MASTER PLAN......
Ulthar,
It's a great, quiet place to have a vacation. Let me know when you come down, it'd be great to meet someone from the board.
