Title: Silent Hill (2006)
Post by: BeyondTheGrave on August 23, 2006, 08:22:01 PM
Hey everyone I haven't wrote a review in awhile so I deiced to start again with a movie that I have been waiting for years to come out every since I played the first game and all of its sequels.

The story itself is pretty basic. The main charater Rose decides to bring her adopted daughter to Silent Hill after she keeps sleepwalking and screaming about silent hill. After Rose has run in Cybil a policewoman she rears off the road to avoid hitting someone (one of the monsters?) and hits her head on the wheel knocking her out. When she wakes up her daughter is gone and she proceeds into Slient Hill to look for her.

The dialogue for this movie is very weak. It seems like they just talk for nothing just to have dialogue (Hope you guys like to hear witch and burn alot). The charaters actions seem to make no sense at all either. I have no idea why Rose started to drive away from the Cybil or why Cybil even bother to follow Rose in the first place. Even the stupid thing Cybil does to save Rose which just seemed to be their advance the plot to have Cybil captured. Which bring me to my next point: Their was really no point in having Cybil in the movie. I think she was their to appease hardcore Silent Hill fans but her charater was so throwaway.

The subplot with Rose's husband looking to find info about Silent Hill was just a waste as it did nothing for the story and pulled you out from the atomsphere of town and Rose. It felt like they just needed male charaters on the screen because all the of major charaters are women .

Some high points in the movie is the monsters which are just awesome and ripped straight from the game. Even thought sometimes the movie seemed to dark to really appreciate them. Some of the deaths are pretty gruesome to.

All in all its one of the better (if not best) video game movies which might not be saying much. I was satisfied with it but I'm a long term fan of Silent Hill. Can't recommend this to non-fans.

I was REALLY looking forward to this one, so much that I went to see it while my husband was in California (he was UNhappy, but eh.)  Anyway, it started out really promising, very creepy.  The first instance with the siren was effective.  But, it just kind of stretched out and out, on and on, and Alice Krige just p**sed me off after awhile.  And I like the woman as an actress.

I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it like I was expecting to.  We'll rent it, so hubby can watch it, but I think he'll be more disappointed.

I completely agree with Cybil being a throwaway character, I think they just needed someone to look cute in leather.  *s*

And the husband...was that Sean Bean?  Man.  What a waste there.

I played the first game, and it creeped me right out.  I really liked it.  I was so hoping this would be good and scary.

Not terrible, but not wonderful.  Just, eh.

I was looking foward to this too. it was just "Meh" but it is probably the best video game movie in recent memory which is sad if you think about it.

Yeah the husband was Sean Bean. Your rightwith Cybil she did look good in leather. Other reason is since this was based mostly on the first game they just had to throw Cybil in there.

I liked most of the visuals. The village buried in ashes was a joy to watch, so eerie, and some of the acting, while pretty unidimensional, was OK in my book. My main problem with the movie is the central mystery. Christophe Gans and Roger Avary seem to think that a mystery movie is one in which we are told nothing about it for 90 minutes and then have some character explain the whole thing in five minutes. Yawn.

It didn't scare me much, but I appreciated how most of the time it limired itself to point out that "something" was going in there but without revealing too much. The nurses scene, though, was very good.
