Title: OT: Good PC Games
Post by: Ed, Ego and Superego on September 19, 2006, 05:34:43 PM
Hey folks, I am looking for some gaming entertainment.  I don't have a console system and wiill not be buying one, but I can fork out a few bucks for a new game.  Any suggestions?  I 'm not into sports or flight simulators, and online is not a requirement (and probably not a desire, I don't play well  with others).
RPG (the less like Diablo the better), Strategy, Shooter, or other simulation. I'm open to suggestions.
Thanks!
-Ed

search for "flash games" on google.

Every once in a while you will find a good one.

Skaboi,
Is F.E.A.R. that good?  And I am a long-time fan of the Half-Life games.

I've heard F.E.A.R. is great but it's a system hog.
You have to have a pretty high-end p.c. to handle it.
Go here (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/fear/review.html) to learn more and be sure to watch Gamespot's video review where they break it down and show game footage.

If you like Steam and the Half-Life games, I totally recommend Day of Defeat Source (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_defeat_source).
I'm not 100% on this but I don't believe you need to have Half-Life 2 to play the retail version.

It's an awesome game!

Yep, F.E.A.R. demands a very high system. Same goes for the last "Ghost Recon" instalment, in case you had considered.

But "Half life 2" and "Prey" are amazing games, and should run on almost any recent computer. And if you like war-based FPS with a twist, I found both "Brothers in arms" games very involving.

I can't recommend many other games because FPS apart, I'm more into real old stuff, like DOS games and emulation. My best friend was really hooked with "Need for Speed - Most Wanted", though.

Neville,
I do some Old-School games too, I currently play Unreal Tournament 99 quite a lot. I finished the Knights of the Old Republic RPG a few months ago.
THanks for all the input folks!

Ed:

My favorite RPGs are

Fallout
Fallout 2
Baldur's Gate
Baldur's Gate 2

Play the Fallout series, especially.  But in terms of a big, fire-breathing dragon of an RPG, nothing is better than Baldur's Gate 2 that I've seen.  (Even though these games are dated.)

Played a number of these computer games and playstation games, but I find WAR CRAFT and STAR CRAFT along with some of the other similiar games like AGE OF EMPIRES to be the best.

The shooting player point of view games are sometimes fun, but not as interesting as the more strategic games were you built civilizations and armies. Even though many of them are similiar in concept.

Scott,
I like mix of tactical combat without having to micromanage every aspect of your society:
"City B has a shortage of apple sauce and are unhappy, make corrections!"
Just drives me nuts.

I liked the Old Star Trek Birth of the Federation and Alpha Centauri games.  My big complaint with Aplpha Centauri and the Civilization series wa sthat towards the end all technologies were about the same.

Well, I don't like that type game eithier Ed which is what the earlier games where like, but rather if you make a mistake you are over run by stronger forces like in Warcraft and Starcraft. Playing online is silly though with the Starcraft type games as people can use cheats or it's just a matter of who can click the mouse faster.

Have any of you guys tried you hand at Guild Wars? I purchased this the day it came out and was VERY disapointed. I even had to go and buy a $130 video card so my system could play it.  But I hated it. Neverwinter Nights is still one of my all time favorites and there are numerous extension packs to put on it. I would vertainly suggest this game to anyone.

MAn, that sucks, I was looking at Guild Wars the other day.  Thanks for the warning.  How "Tolkien-y" or traditional fantasy is Neverwinter nights?

Yeah, I put that on sometime last year.  I forgot how ground breaking that was in its day.  What I would like is a resurgence of the System Shock franchise.  Sci Fi RGP/Shooter  SS2 was the scariest game I ever played.
