I'm one of the lucky bastards that own a copy, a gift even. If I've a made a new friend and they come over to the house a couple of times, the third time I usually insist that we watch Forbidden Zone. You really can learn alot about a person by watching this movie with them.
After the Forbidden Zone, I'll suggest Canibal the Musical and then a little Jesco the Dancing Outlaw.
I have an old BETA tape of this classic flick. The "STAR WARS" of B&W titty musicals. In the 80's I remember putting this one on when an Acid party was going on. BIG HIT!
Very FUNNY and SEXY.
a Classic... the soundtrack kicks ass too!
I reserved the Soundtrack at my library, yes they actually had it, on CD no less, and let me tell you, one of the strangest things I have ever heard. The First song was used as the intro to the Dilbert Cartoon TV show. I don't know if any of you saw that.
How could this not have been one of the first movies you reviewed. What does this movie NOT have. WOW.. a midget, naked chicks, a musical, interdimensional travel.. This film ... I must possess it.
I have never heard of this film before... From the way it's described, it sounds like a cross between Eraserhead and the Resident's "Vileness Fats."
I havent seen this movie in YEARS, but holy crap do I remember it being about the strangest friggin thing I have ever seen
I haven't seen the movie, but I seem to remember the film-makers saying it was supposed to be a live-action Betty Boop cartoon. From the description, it sounds like they got pretty close.
This movie kicks ass. My older brother first got this movie and I saw it with him. I loved it so much I recorded a copy for myself. I also have the soundtrack, which, I fully recommend to anyone who likes early Oingo Boingo. A little stranger than Only A Lad, but still great sounding stuff.
I just purchased this gem from a Canadian outfit, and did I ever enjoy it! I guess I was expecting more amateurish acting like in the first few John Waters movies (Female Trouble comes to mind, or Hag in a Black Leather Jacket), but it was surprisingly well done (well, for what it is, you know, I mean, it's supposed to be this way). Anyway, all I can say is thanks so much for the recommendation!
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. When I met the woman I ended up marrying, I knew she was the one for me when I showed her this movie on a date and she came back.
Enjoyable flick. I've been a fan of Elfman ever since he was in Nightmare Before Christmas, so this was a must-see. By the way, the Python bit mentioned was indeed something similar to an animation in Monty Python's Flying Circus, only the cast was flushed down a drain, not out a giant ass. Makes a bit of a difference.
I was on a two month tour on a seismic research vessel in the Gulf of Mexico (in the eighties) and a video of this movie was (miraculously) provided along with the usual ("they're only oil-field dross") shoot-em-ups.
At the first showing most of the guys were yelling "why are we watching this crap". Myself and one other (out of about 30 hands) thought it was great and kept sneaking into the VCR.
What d'you know?!!? After a few weeks, all the guys on board had become Elfman addicts, and everytime enough of the hands were present for somebody to have the energy to insert a tape, the cry went up "The Forbidden Zone, The Forbidden Zone". There's hope for s**t-kickers and coon-arses yet!
BUT WHERE DO I FIND A COPY TO PLAY ON A UK VCR?
Love to all (and especially The Princess - wasn't she "Viva" of Andy Warhol Factory fame?) from
Bill on the Isle of Dogs, London, UK.
I went with a friend of mine to where she worked, and the owner (a friend of hers) gave me an original 1980 copy. Needless to say I almost had a corinary(I'm a gigantic Oingo Boingo/Danny Elfman fan). I've showed it to pretty much everyone I know & they've either said WTF afterwards or begged me to tape it for them. I even showed it to my boyfriend on one of our first dates. We kinda both agreed that Forbidden Zone is like having a really screwed up dream while you're still awake.
ehhhh bananna oil!
I taped this movie one night when I was like, twelve, or so. Since then, I've watched it at least 100 times.
No sh_t--100 times.
I saw this movie clip on your website, and decided I had to find it. I LUCKED OUT as someone had a copy in perfect condition on Ebay.
This movie is way wierd in the best kind of way. The best way I can describe it is kind of like a high-school play crossed with a wierd dream / acid trip, and then steeped in bizarre sexuality. The music is great, although the audio is a little sketchy during some of the dialogue.
All-in-all I'd say a must see. If you get a chance, see this flick.
I finally found a copy of this movie after looking for about 4 or 5 months. Man, what a trip!
I think we saw better with CLASH OF THE TITANS the creatures there did not look so hoaky and they were more realistic and at least in clash pegasus was rather wild about the little mechanical owl bubo(hoot, hoot)
If all of television and cinema was to disappear from the planet except for one movie, the Forbidden Zone would be that one I would like to keep.
It is strange. It is non-linear. It is majestic.
I have to say that this is, hands down, my favorite movie of all times. As it has been said before, it has everything anybody could ever want in a movie. This is what I pop in when movies running too low for acid. A trip all of its own. And of course, Danny rocks!!!
I just watched this movie for the first time, holly crap I love it!
Absurd, surrealism and puppet theater like show...
I must say I hadn't had such a pleasure for awhile!
The first time i saw this movie was on the big screen around halloween at one of the arts theaters in Dallas. It IS available for rent in one store i visited, in Taos New Mexico. If you're ever going through the place, it's Mondo Video in the Kulture Kafe, that place has so many obscure and international movies, including a lot i've seen on here. :}
Great review! Lousy film but had to see it just for Oingo Boingo and Danny Elfman (also Herve). Its disturbing imagery also reminded me of Eraserhead. Great soundtrack! Thanks to this review I now know what the movie was about... didn't help the film any but at least now I know. Thank ye much.
I got to see this film last night. I have only three words to describe it. WHAT THE f**k!? I love the movie it was the greatest thing ive seen in a while and im a sucker to movies that LOOK LIKE they've been made on literally a shoe string budget.
I loved how the sets looked like they were drawn by crayon/marker on big ass pieces of cardboard. And the characters, how could I describe them? Unusual id have to say, theres many other words I could use but unusual says the most.
My favorite character is Huckleberry P. Jones I laugh my ass
off to steriotypes, black, white, brown, etc. Its the "american dream".
"Your the Faggot".
I kept thinking only one thing the entire movie: WTF?!
Nice nips on the Princess, tho...
I've got the special edition DVD of this. Danny Elfman rocks in it!
This is a great movie to whip out on unsuspecting people.
I have to say this-this movie rocks!......Funny thing, I recently bought the new version of the nightmare before christmas soundtrack, and it had danny elfman doing demo versions of some of the songs. When it came to oggie boogie's song, all I could think of was elfman dressed as satan, singing it in front of herve vellachaize dressed as santa claus. That would rule! :hot:
New multiple features DVD is out there people...but would you believe the scientologists got the director? :bluesad:
I absolutely LOVE this movie! All of my friends who have seen this film have a negative opinion of it, but I just adore it. I just fell in love with Danny Elfman as Satan.
So, any thoughts on the colorized version the director produced?

This is my ALL TIME favourite Cult/B-Movie. Seriously. This movie is a classic. While the audience participation of Rocky Horror is an unbeatable experience, I actually think on its own merits this is even better than Rocky Horror. I just wish that my husband didn't wait so long to watch this with me, he said that the cover reminded him of Divine. I don't know why, Susan Tyrell is an actual woman and really isn't that ugly even if she's a little creepy looking. I finally got him to watch it when I said it had Minnie the Moocher in it. His love for that song is probably equal to Danny Elfman, Cab Calloway is his favourite. Naturally, he loved it.
This movie always manages to cure depression for me. If I'm in a bad mood or depressed, I pop this baby in and laugh my ass off. I actually have hopes that the sequel will be decent, I know sequels to cult movies are usually a bad idea (See: Shock Treatment) but I think Richard Elfman can pull it off, plus it'll be fun to see the expanded Elfman clan in it, supposedly Jenna's gunna show up in it.
It's just a shame that Herve died and won't appear in #2, but that shouldn't ruin it.
Pretty much my all time favorite movie. I discovered it in 8th grade, being a huge fan of Danny Elfman. Every day before school I'd get up over an hour early for school and watch this film!! Every morning! I have it memorized. Definitely a great cult film.
why the hell do people like this movie so much!?!? this thing is friggen terrible, i mean yeah its interesting but the whole thing is just a bad acid trip in black and white! Screw this fricken movie, i hated it full heartedly, no offence to those who liked it but i like it when my movies you kno... make some damn sence!
Proved a pretty simple point to me: when EVERYTHING is bad/overacted/crazy, it becomes just as tedious as if nothing was.
one of the craziest movies I've ever seen.
It's one of those movies where people say they think another movie is weird. And I say "have you heard of the forbidden zone?" they of course say "no". So we watch it and then they no longer understand what "weird" is because what they thought was "weird" was actually pretty much...not. lol.
