Title: Favorite Soft Drink
Post by: Ash on December 21, 2006, 11:20:04 AM
I can't remember if we've talked about soft drinks before so I figured I'd drop a new poll.

How about you?
What's your favorite soft drink?

I'm focusing only on major brands.  I specifically decided not to delve into some of the little known brands.  I've also decided to not split hairs and include "diet" versions of each soda.

Do you call it "pop", soda" or something else?

Are there other soft drinks besides Dr Pepper?  :tongueout:

Not to get too nitpicky, Ash, but there is no period after the "Dr" in Dr Pepper. It was done away with some time ago. Down here in Texas, we take our hometown soda seriously (Dr Pepper was invented in Waco).  :teddyr:

You're right Derf.
I should've known that...

I love Dr Pepper....but it's easy to drink too much of it...like Forrest Gump did during his visit to the White House.   :drink:

"I gotta pee!"

I stopped drinking soda months ago. Don't really care for in. Rarely before I stopped drinking soda I would drink Sprite. Now I drink iced tea or water.

Mt. Dew is my addiction. It's funny now that they make it out to be so cool in the ads. When Pepsi introduced back in the 60's in came in bottles with hillbillies on them and said something like Bottled by Jeb on them.  Gee, now I really feel prehistoric.

LOL I don't have any of these drinks in shops (eg. Faygo, Mello Yello, Shasta) and second half I hate (Pepsi, Fanta etc). Root beers are only in one pub and it is simple mix of ordinary beer with ginger juice or something like that.  :bouncegiggle:

But I'd like to try a Faygo, too big influence of ICP's music hehe

Coca-Cola for me. I am totally addicted to it. I drink it with EVERYTHING. No matter how cold it is in the morning, I'd rather have a coke than a hot cup of coffee. I go through about two cases (24 cans) a week. I've been drinking it at that rate for years. I figured out once that I've consumed enough of it over the last 20 years to fill a decent sized swimming pool.

If there's a thread that will give you diabetes just reading it, I'm sure we've come close.

I remember a friend's little sister who would have coke with her cereal [as in, instead of milk 'with']  That was pretty bad.

I have to say I'm a Coca-cola slave.  Very much so in fact.  But then again we don't have half of the brands that you folk have in the states.

I mean, we don't even call it soda or pop.  Usually people just generalise 'coke' when asking for cola [which I suppose is a result of excellent marketing here] or fizzy drink etc.

Now the real question is, is it best out of a glass or plastic bottle or out of a can?

I feel these questions are the important ones.

Personally my order of preference is Glass, Can then Plastic, but like I said before, I'm a slave, so I tend to go more for the plastic for the sheer volume.

Title: Re: Favorite Soft Drink

Definitely glass.
I think most soda tastes terrible out of plastic.
But since 99.99% of all soft drinks are sold in plastic containers these days, I have to put up with it.

And dean...when I was down in OZ, I do remember everyone calling all soft drinks "coke" no matter what brand it was.

Had to go with Surge.  That stuff was pure nectar from Heaven.  Don't know why they quit making it.....

Now I have to drink Vault to satisfy my Surge cravings.   Just not the same though.

Also, around here we just call it "drink".  You'd be laughed out of a store if you asked for "pop"

As a rule, I'm generally impartial to colas, but I'll occasionally treat myself to a Yoo-Hoo.

Personally I've always wished that somebody would come out with Peppermint Soda, for, uh, well, you know.

I drink bottled water, but when at a restruant or someplace  and I didn't bring water and they don't offer bottled water then I order Coke or Pepsi. When I was a kid I kinda liked Orange soda and Root Beer.

They say that a lot of obesity is from soda as much as from food.

Coca-Cola.

I've gone through a phase where I was a Barq's man. How I used to drive my family crazy to get that stuff ever time we went on a trip down I-65. the nearest place to get it was a gas station outside Cullman. We'd bring back cases of the stuff that I'd burn through in no time. By the time it was available here, I lost my taste for it.

I was an RC man for a while, paid for a whole summer's worth of them once with tag team "one free RC Cola" caps everytime I went to the store. I even tried their failed Draft RC Cola, it came in a rather beer-like bottle, the guy at the store carded me for it! Now RC is too sweet for me. It was too many summer of buying 99 cent six-packs at  Foodland.

But I always came back to Coke. But as I get older and take better care of myself, I can rarely have more than two in one day without just get sick of the second one.

In Alabama (and much of the South) every soft drink is a "coke", the fast food places that serve Pepsi products have to tell you they don't have coke or ask "What kind?" When I lived in DC, I had this problem all the time, good thing I liked Coca-Cola.

When Brits (and others) call them "fizzy drinks" I find it quaint for some goofy reason, but in a good way.

I would say cola in general, since I'll drink whatever is available, and even enjoy store brands, but I would specifically say Pepsi is my number-one brand. Used to be a loyal Coke drinker, but I just find it doesn't taste as good as it used to.

I go through about two cases (24 cans) a week.

That few, huh?

I can knock out a case (24) in a day.

My favorite is Diet Mountain Dew, of sorts.

I usually try to buy store brands to save money and often end up buying Kroger's version, Diet Citrus Drop.

My very favorite though, even more than Diet Mountain Dew itself, is Meijer's store brand copy of it, Diet Rocky Mist; I'll drink even more in a day if I have that.

My tastes today are quite different than when I was a kid. As a kid, I loved root beer (can't stand the damn stuff today). I also liked Upper 10; similar to Sprite/7up. I can't stand Sprite/7up drinks today; just too damn sweet.

We have a local ginger ale in Winchester: Ale81. Good lord I can't stand that stuff. Ginger ale is bad enough, but this stuff will eat paint off of a car. We call it Winchester Swamp Water.

I do miss glass bottles; though it is easier to carry a 12 pack of cans with you.

Okay, the part that grosses out everyone who sees me drink a soft drink: I keep them at room temperature. I got used to that years ago when I worked security and had no place to keep soft drinks cold. They keep their fizz longer that way anyway.

You just drop a handfull in yer pop bottle...and you eat the peanuts as you drink yer soda pop....I was skeptical at first as well...but it IS good...really! Never tried boiled peanuts...sounds weird to me as well.

Peanuts and Dr. Pepper are best, however only in the glass bottles preferably the 10 oz. size with 2 oz bag of peanuts. When I was a kid you could get both the 10 oz DP and 2 oz bag of Planters Roasted for less than a 25 cents.

It's apparently a Southern thing that is especially rampant in Florida. When I went to Florida one August, you couldn't avoid the road signs from shop or roadside vendors selling them.

Since I was a little kid, Orange Crush has been my favourite. I like it diet (sweetened with Splenda) or regular. I also like Caffeine Free Diet Pepsi but that's full of aspartame. I also like CPlus but less so.

Wish I could get it in glass bottles around here. Agree that the flavor in bottles is better. Haven't seen it in glass bottles in years.

Mountain Dew, especially since they've introduced some of the somewhat newer flavors to it, like the Orange "LiveWire" Mt. Dew, plus the three new ones you can vote for, the BlueBerry etc, ones they have.  Good stuff.

I only drink diet sodas, especially Coke, Pepsi and local Irn-Bru. They must also be bone-freezingly cold as I find that they taste better that way. Actually, like Shadow I prefer a can of diet cola first thing in the morning to coffee or tea.

Dr. Pepper for general drinking.

Mountain Dew during an RPG session with my friends.  I'm so freaking p*ssed that they took Mountain Dew Game Fuel off the market.  It tasted like drinking gummi bears and was an acknowledgement of who Mountain Dew's true consumer base was.  Now I drink Live Wire or Regular.

Bawls if I need to pull an all-nighter.  Actually, I haven't had Bawls since March 4th, 2008 -- we held an all-night RPG session and  vigil when Gary Gygax passed from the Material Plane.

Also, I can remember as a kid, mom making us chocolate dr peppers. you can get something similar at sonic, but it just isn't the same.
Whenever I go over to kentucky side, i often pick up a bottle of Ale-8. It seems like i see it less and less though...

There are a few store with Ale-8-One here, but it's more of a Central Kentucky thing. Sun Drop is the citrus drink of choice here, I mean who can pass up something with "wood rosin" in it?

I do Cherry Dr Pepper at Sonic, I hit Happy Hour at Sonic (jumbo size is less than a buck) nearly every day and grab one. But nothing is going to taste like the ones made in the bottles, just not the same.

They've actually started to bring Sun Drop back here in Iowa.
I was at a local grocery store (Hy-Vee) recently and spotted Sun Drop in one of those impulse refrigerators situated right in front of the checkout lanes.
I bought a bottle of it and it was the bomb!
And the price was right.  Only 89 cents.

It only seems to be sold in that chain of stores, though.  I haven't been able to find it anywhere else.

And why would they put wood rosin in it?

The A&W sodas are very good.  I believe they have a "Vanilla Creme" that I like to buy on occasion.

And, I forget which comic it was, but there was a comedian who did a funny bit about Mr. Pibb being a lazy version of Dr. Pepper.  Not even attempting to graduate college.  Just like, "I'm content here."

Although, Wendy's does sell Mr. Pibb.  Good stuff.
