Title: Recent DVD Purchases
Post by: Andrew on January 03, 2007, 06:51:46 PM
Well, a batch of DVDs arrived recently.

The Mutilator
Said I would review it and ordered the Region 2, PAL DVD.

What Waits Below
Another Region 2, PAL DVD.  Went ahead and got this so I could do the best work possible for the upcoming interview article.

Dungeons and Dragons - Animated Series
For Akiraturbo's review.  I had not seen this set in person, so the box made me smile.  It is designed to be reminiscent of the old basic system box.

APEX
Third, but not least of the Region 2, PAL DVDs.  My copy of this, which was a tired old ex-rental VHS, went missing. I procured a new VHS, but it turned out to have tracking problems and was just as worn as the one I had before.  Finally, with this, I can look at working on a review.

Xtro/Xtro 2
I watched the first the other night.  It had been a long time since I had seen the film.  The birth scene was impossible to forget, but I had managed to forget how much of the film dealt with the little boy using his powers in strange, kid-centered ways.

I've been meaning to see Xtro for years again. The birth scene scared me as a child and probably tramatized me as well.

Pay back time.

I picked up a Demolition Man/ Over the Top flipper disc this past weekend for 5 dollars.  They're both anamorphic widescreen and DM has a commentary track with the director and producer on it.

I also picked up Cobra and Tango & Cash seperately a week ago as I've been a bit on a Sly binge since seeing Rocky 6 3 weeks ago.   :teddyr:

Torgo, my Other Half has been dying to get both Cobra and Tango and Cash. Were those widescreen or pan and scan?

I spent my Christmas money this past weekend and brought home:

Galaxina
Future-Kill
Christmas Evil (the new synapse edition)
The Brood
Frogs
Curse of the Crying Woman
The Witch's Mirror
Robot Jox
The Golden Child
Enemy Mine
The Church
Demonia

Plus, last night I ordered Graveyard Shift and Planet of the Dinosaurs online.

If you get the old DVD's seperately, They're anamorphic widescreen on side A and full screen on Side B.

If you get the old gold banner "double Feature" DVD, they've got the 2 discs in one case.

But watch out for the recent "grey banner" flipper disc that just has the full screen versions of them on it.

btw, the recent Christmas Evil DVD rocks.  Makes a great double bill with the more recent Santa's Slay starring the ex-wrestler Goldberg.

We saw one of those double feature discs the other day, but it must have been the "Grey banner" since both films were full frame. We held out in hopes of finding a WS version. Thanks for the info.

I used a Best Buy gift card I got for christmas, to buy seasons 1 and 2 of Wonder Showzen.  I'm not terribly fond of many of the cartoons shown on this show (It tries a little TOO hard to be offensive), but the stuff that works, really works.

And it's really funny if you're like me, and you remember Sesame Street from the 80's, from the floundering pre-Elmo days.  Back then it was a very odd, but interesting collection of trippy cartoon shorts, and old films for filler.  These guys take those kinds of things, and just turn them into the most twisted, evil, and sick things imaginable.

It's probably good this show only lasted two seasons...just like with other absurd comedies, like Britain's "The Young ones", anything more than two seasons would have probably led to the work becomming very stale and uninteresting.

Has anyone seen a tv show from the 90s called "Monsters" http://www.tv.com/monsters/show/379/summary.html?q=monsters&tag=search_results;title;0 (http://www.tv.com/monsters/show/379/summary.html?q=monsters&tag=search_results;title;0) on DVD? It's a hard title to search for.

Xtro rules, I love when that toy comes to life.

I just bought Hard Rock Zombies. It looks really bad, can't wait to get it in the mail.

As far as I know it hasn't been released on DVD.  I bought a VHS tape with a couple of episodes.  I can't recall the titles but one is about a doctor who battles diseases that are manifested into a physical form, and another about a werewolf family.  I was very young when it aired on television and I don't think I ever watched anything but the intro which I thought was frightening.

Once again Andrew, thanks for doing The Mutilator review!  Can't wait!  Also, what are the special features on that Region 2 DVD?  I might have to pick it up.

Pilgermann, I too remember Monsters.  It used to air on our local Fox channel at 7 on Sunday nights in the late 80s along with Tales From The Darkside.  I always loved Monsters best.  I recall two episodes almost perfectly.  One was about a couple in a high rise building being chased by an enormous spider.  That one only fueled my fright of spiders.

The other episode was about a guy doing a satanic ritual with a pentagram and such.  I seem to remember him summoning some type of green "slime" creature.  I don't remember what the creature did though.

I'd kill to see a DVD release of the show, but I doubt it'll happen.  As is the case with much of the 80 syndicated TV shows (Freddy's Nightmares anyone?), the only way we'll see them again is from bootlegs on Ebay.

I've gotten a few of those 4 and 10 movie sets that Brentwood puts out on DVD, pretty good stuff for the bad movie lover.

Beasts of Terror - I bought this because I've been wanting to see Snowbeast, a movie I watched as a kid and remembered rather vividly.  It did not disappoint.  The plot involves a Yeti attacking people at a Colorado ski resort, sort of the Jaws plot on the ski slopes.  The other three movies were okay, very slow moving, but I enjoyed them because they're made-for-TV movies from the '70s and it was a nice nostalgia trip.

Vamps and Witches - Only watched 2 of the 4 movies in this set so far.  Witchouse 3 was okay.  It didn't quite suck.  About some girl who's in an abusive relationship and so she leaves and moves in with a couple of friends, only to discover they're witches or something.  Pretty uninteresting.  Witchcraft 12 was sort of a soft-core porno, 5 minutes of plot, 5 of sex, etc.  There was one hot looking babe and I basically watched it just to see what sexy outfit she'd show up in next.

Fright Night 10 movie set - Just watched 2 of these so far.  God Told Me To was a baffling mess about normal people who all of a sudden became mass murderers, claiming God told them to do it.  Pieces was a slasher about a guy who chopped up college girls in order to use their body parts for puzzle pieces.

Night Chills 10 movie set - Only watched one of these so far, Slashdance.  It's a slow moving slasher about girls getting killed at a dance company.  Lots of girls in sexy spandex outfits from the '80s, but other than that it was pretty awful.  The film quality was pretty bad so I couldn't even properly appreciate the babes.  There's one in this set called Machine Head about a guy who works at a mortuary and attaches a lawn mower motor to a corpse's head and makes some sort of killing machine out of him - I can't wait to see what that one is like. :)

Gosh darn it, I could not locate my copy of "Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah" anywhere, so I ordered it from Amazon again.  That after touching bases with friends and family.  Dennis, give me a week or so on that avatar.

While I was at it, I ordered the "Tremors Attack Pack" (I always order at least $25 from Amazon - might as well get the free shipping) with all of the movies.

I have a couple of episodes of "Monsters" on VHS.  It is not impossible that the series will make it to DVD.  Science fiction and horror series seem to have a better chance than comedy or drama stuff.  I mean, look at the DVD set of "Space: Above and Beyond."

Special features on the DVD were almost nil, but it is a low-rate VIPCO DVD (think Brentwood quality).  The picture quality was fair, about what you would expect from a normal VHS of a movie like this.  For extras, I think it had a small picture gallery and some trailers.  Neither interested me, so I did not check them out.

Funny thing, but I do not believe I had seen this movie before.  Could have sworn I did, but seeing it makes me doubt that.  Must have mixed it up with another film.

Oh yeah, I remember that. Gotta love the carnivorous bed!

My recent DVD purchases are as follows:

Creature Unknown- A 2003 guy-in-rubber-monster-suit flick where Chase Masterson (anyone know about her? Apperantly she's a big enough star to have her name on the front cover) tries to save some dumb teens from the aforementioned rubber monstrosity. I expect to be selling it at my next garage sale for $1.

Gorgo- I think you should all know about this one. If not, it's a 60s British Godzilla rip-off.

The Beast From 20 000 Fathoms- Ray Harryhausen's pre-Godzilla classic.

I've yet to watch any of them, though. Expect a review of Creature Unknown in the Reviews section sometime in the next few weeks, however.

Aside from cheap movies like this, her main claim to fame was a re-occurring role on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

The "Tales Of Voodoo" box set came in today.  I had forgotten that I pre-ordered it.

It's going for about 5 dollars more than what I bought it for on pre-order now at Amazon.  I popped in one of the DVDs for a moment before leaving for work, and I must say that I'm highly disappointed at the quality.  The transfer was extremely blurry and almost unwatchable.  I hope the other films in the set aren't as bad.

I remember Monsters, should have taped it when it aired on SciFi, but I thought there were more episodes than there actually are.

The one with the couple and the giant spider was good, since it turned out the folks who booked the couple were luring honeymooners there to feed to the spider, loved that they were unseen and it was unresolved. But part of me wanted a sequel where the bride tracked them down and got revenge.

There was one I liked with Meatloaf as a shady surgeon hiding out in a stereotypical Latin America dictatorship. He had developed a formula that allowed organs to be easily transplanted without fear of rejection, and keep the donor alive. He and several friends had all benefited from harvesting the organs of a leader of the local rebellion, who all had known earlier in life. The rebel was still alive in the cellar lab, and eventually escapes to take revenge and take back his body parts. The people all turn on each other, and he reunites with his organs and plans to continue the revolution. Fun pulpy story, would have made a good Tales from the Crypt episode since it could have had a bigger budget and better effects.

Someone had started that Robocop thread the other day and I decided to try to find the 1994 television series that most folks hadn't heard of. Seems they never released it on DVD in North America (at I couldn't find a Region 1 copy anywhere). So I went on Ebay and I now have the complete series (22 episodes and the 1.5 hour pilot) on the way from Sussex, England. It's Region 2, but my player is region free.

I'll report on it when I get it in.

I bought the 10 Pack.  It's all 5 volumes of the Tales Of Voodoo series with 2 films per DVD.  I have yet to watch Jungle Virgin Force.  I think I'll give it a try tomorrow night.

I did end up watching what I thought was Devil's Express after looking it up on IMDB.  Sounded like a great film.  Sadly, the film was not Devil's Express but was actually "The Devil" which was quite bad.

That's the only thing about these cheapo DVD packs.  You never know what film you're going to end up watching.

Wow, a lot of good ones in there.  Not all are great to watch, but both "War in Space" and "Fabulous Journey" have some interesting ideas.  In case you have not seen the latter before, I will not spoil it, but there is a weird side-plot thrown in that comes from left field.

"Seven Samurai" is one of the best films ever made.  I keep asking people if they have seen it, they tell me heck no, I show it to them, and they go out and buy themselves a copy.

The recent 3 disc Criterion Collection of Seven Samurai easily got my pick for DVD of the year for 2006.

They've got similar type editions coming out for Yojimbo and Sanjuro in February I belive.

I'll spare everyone the list of titles. Just wanted to say that I've been snagging sets from Mill Creek for a while (not to mention reviewing them on my oft-neglected blog), and they are so worth the time and money. Just keep in mind that they are often compiling junky versions of some of these films, but it makes for a great way to sample a buttload of films for 20 bucks or less.

Most recent set I got from them was the Cult Classics, full of the old anti-drug, anti-sex films from the 30's and 40's.  Oddly enough, in the midst of such films, they added "Terror Of Tiny Town". Does that mean it is an anti-little people movie?

I'll say! It just waltzes in from out of nowhere, looks around a bit and then walks right back out. No explanation, no follow-up and no resolution! Weird.

I got the DVD of Idiocracy over the weekend, but haven't watched it yet.  (I've already seen it once.)  Thanks for reminding me of the 3-disc Seven Samurai though...or, more accurately, that I still need to watch the original 1-disc Criterion version that's gathering dust in my backlog from hell...
