I actually like Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 better than the 1st movie.
I realize that it's not a better film per se, but for pure entertainment value it wins hands down.
MGM thankfully released a special edition of part 2 a little while back that is filled to the brim.
Does anyone else prefer part 2 to the original film?

Texas Chainsaw 2 is a favorite of mine. It beats the original without any question at all. I've never been a fan of the original, and found it to be quite boring.
The sequel is what we live for on this board. It's silly, insane and has a certain charm to it. Chop Top is probably the best thing about the film for me. Love the introduction to his character, with him lighting up the clothes hanger and pulling skin from his head...pure genuis!
Also love the scene where Hopper knocks a hole in the wall and the guts start pouring out.

Most of my friends don't share for my enthusiasm for part 2. They just don't get the film and tend to just go back to watching the original.
Plus, I'm a huge Primus fan so how could I hate the movie where they sampled Chop Top's "Dog will hunt!" line for their classic track Jerry Was a Race Car Driver? :cheers: :cheers:
I consider the first one of my top 10 favorite horror movies of all time,but part 2 is ok for what it is. I think the utter disdain many hardcore horror fans feel for it is as a result that,like many sequels to great movies, it's not as good.Or even close.I think it's alot of fun,in it's own way.Lotsa action,gore and a bizzare performance by Dennis Hopper and pre-DEVILS REJECTS Bob Mosley.
I always thought it was pretty damn good... the original is probably my favorite horror movie of all time though... and I agree with Torgo... I remember renting this movie when I was younger (I'd say it was probably like 1998ish) and when I heard that line I jumped up and was like HOLY s**t!

This is a review I wrote about it a few years ago:
Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 is one of those movies that gore fanatics and Fangoria readers rave about. For them, this movie delivers. For others this is just a rehash of the original with plenty of gore injected to make up for what is lacking in the script.
I did get the impression that Hooper may have tired of being nagged to do a sequel to his classic and instead did an over-the-top send-up to put an end to it. Unfortunately this just gave fuel to the idea of a sequel for others to do one; and we have been beaten over the head since.
In this sequel, the family, now named the Sawyers (it loses something actually naming the family), has relocated to another texas community. Sally and Franklin's uncle, a Texas Ranger, played by Dennis Hopper (with much macho zest and...aw hell...forget it), is on the trail of the family. He enlists the aid of a lady DJ nicknamed Stretch (yes, have as much fun with that one as you would like) to draw out the family through her radio broadcasts.
Leatherface, now called Bubba (why?), takes a liking to Stretch and really wants to show her his chainsaw (I am not kidding, the chainsaw becomes an overly obvious phallic image in this movie). Leatherface also likes to dance when he attacks with his chainsaw by using a move he learned by watching a few too many ZZ Top videos.
Beyond this point the movie consists of a lot of gore and redone scenes from the first movie (hit her grandpa, hit her; and even the chainsaw dance at the end). The technical inaccuracies with regard to special effects and continuity with the first film are abundant (anybody familiar with the first film will laugh at the sight of Franklin's flashlight, and let's not even talk about pickups doing 100mph in reverse).
If Hooper's intention was parody, he partly succeeded, but with such extreme gore in contrast to the original. The first movie succeeded so well by leaving the gore to the imagination of the viewer; this movie puts all the gore on-screen and suffers for it.

Yeah, the reaction shots of the store owner are priceless.
I also particularly like how the father does nothing but complain about everything under the sun every single second that he's on screen (and off screen in some cases).
i liked it. it is TCM with added comedy and it worked for me.
i still need to get this one cause i remember when i rented it a few years ago i watched it about three times before i returned it.
the first TCM takes it more serious but even in that there were parts that the family were comedic to me, actually all of the TCM movies have had comedic characters and some were played by comedians i believe, the second just added a lot more of the humor that i liked in the first movie.
The first one was intended to be more serious horror, the second one was clearly intended to be satire. If you like satire you will see the charm of the second. However even those who like the second have to admit, unlike the first, there wasn't any scary moments in the film.
It's a dark comedy essentially and Savini did some of the gore, therefore it rules.
I've never seen the second Texas Chainsaw Massacre film.
It was one of those movies that managed to slip through the cracks.
I've only seen the original and the remake.
And I also saw the one with Renee Zellweger.

Stay away from part 3. It's only redeeming quality to see an early-in-his-career Viggo Mortensen slumming it.
Part 4 was equally unwatchable.
I hated the remake and haven't seen the prequel to the remake (though I will on DVD as I'm a huge R. Lee Ermey fan.)

I have to seriously disagree with that. Part 3 was the best of the sequels. It was the only one which followed the continuity from the original. Hooper himself could not even keep any continuity. If you are rating the movies on gore alone, then part 2 is the goriest, but that is a pretty poor way to rate movies.

Agreed on both accounts. The only, to borrow from you, redeeming quality of part 4 is the appearance of Paul Partain (Franklin in the original) as an orderly pushing a gurney with a woman on it who looks like Marilyn Burns (though credited as anonymous). There is an irony in it that Franklin is now pushing Sally.
All I have to say about the remake is Michael Bay, and that says enough by itself.
I love TCM 2. I like it just as much as part 1, but probably not more. The movies are almost too different from each other to even compare them. TCM 2 makes me laugh more, but TCM 1 is creepier. I have little desire to see the third and fourth installments. I have a feeling they are not worth the bother.
