Title: Army of Darkness: theatrical vs. director's a.k.a. bootleg cut.
Post by: Torgo on January 09, 2007, 04:43:24 PM
Which version of Army of Darkness do you all feel is the far superior cut?  The 81 minute theatrical cut or the 96 minute director's a.k.a. bootleg cut (which also has the original ending)?

I've always been much more partial to the 81 minute theatrical cut. That was the version I originally saw in theaters and it is paced like a bat out of hell.

The 96 minute cut has a few things that I think that they could've kept in the movie (mainly the windmill scene), but overall, I think that this is a case in which the studio was actually correct in getting the movie cut down.

I also prefer the ending of the 81 minute version better.  The 96 minute version ending would've only worked if they had decided to do an Evil Dead 4, which they have adamantly stated that they aren't going to do.

So, discuss which version you all like the best!

The theatrical version is definitely better in my opinion because of the ending, which is far more entertaining than the ending on the directors cut.  The directors cut DVD should have at least included both endings, but it didn't.  I'm glad I didn't buy it because I would have felt gypped.

They originally released the theatrical cut and the director's cut seperately.  Since Anchor Bay has to continuously re-release their Evil Dead and Halloween titles, they then combined them into the Boomstick Edition.

I only picked up the director's cut as that is the one that has the commentary track with Bruce Campbell, Sam Raimi and Ivan Raimi on it.

The UK version had both endings on, so I never bothered with the director's cut. Honestly, it's not a patch on no.2 so I'm not going out of my way hunting it down.
