list 'em up...favourite movies centered around or involving a car.
I haven't givcen this too much thought so Im gonna post the first that come into my head
(http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B000063UR5.01._AA240_SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg)
DUEL 1971: classic film making, maximum suspense with minimum of dialogue/special effects (although some scenes are really well done its not exactly SFX)
BACK TO THE FUTURE: the DeLorean with the flux capacitor(sp?) such a cool car, and it can facilitate time travel, which is a nice bonus.
CHRISTINE 1979: the posessed car routine. pretty good film not a classic though, and I havent read the book but its probably better.
WRAITH 1986: this film is CRAP from beginning to end, in a good-bad-movie sort of way. all about a gang of illegal racers... think The Fast & The Furious crossed with a comedy version of Robocop.
thats all the ones I can think of ATM, maybe do some more later. but add on if theres any more good (or bad) ones.
Whaaaa...?!
Where's DEATHRACE 2000?
EGAD?
How about that classic of cinema, the CAR?Or the MAD MAX films? AlSO
TWO LANE BLACKTOP
VANISHING POINT
The CANNONBALL RUN movies
USED CARS
EAT MY DUST with Ron(Opie)Howard!
MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE
RACE with the DEVIL
GONE in SIXTY SECONDS (the original 70's version)
DIRTY MARY and CRAZY LARRY (a oersonal favorite...)
SMOKEY and the BANDIT
the CARS that ATE PARIS
good call on Vanishing Point, that's a great film....not sure about Maximum Overdrive though, that was about technology going heywire in general wasn't it? don't remember a specific car. good soundtrack by AC/DC anyway.
and we both forgot HERBIE :bluesad:
The Car.
What, nobody else remembered that one? :twirl: (Not that I remember much apart from its existence and a lot of dirt...)
I liked the CAR (1977). A great B movie!
I mentioned MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE on the basis of the killer semi trucks,in perticular the one with the Green Goblin on the grill, which seemed to be the Boss. A lot of people don't like this movie...I love it. And AC/DC kick ass,as usual.Yeah,it was a result of some Night of the living machines type of deal,(though why the VW being drove by the newlyweds wasn't affected is beyond me)but the main attraction was the evil semi trucks.
Would the "Hitcher" count as a car movie?

Would the "Hitcher" count as a car movie?
I wouldn't count it.
Best IMO: Vanishing Point
Worst IMO: (sorry RCMerchant) Maximum Overdrive; The AC/DC soundtrack rocked.
There is probably a lot worse than Maximum Overdrive, but it is on my mind right now, being that it was mentioned, and is pretty bad for the budget and talent involved.
THE WRAITH is actually more like HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER. A lot of fun though in it's B-movie way.
My favorite car movies would have to be..Duel, The Car, and Christine. When I lived in Idaho we used to go to this dam, it was fixed up to look like a beach. We had to drive up this very steep road in the mountains to get to it. This was also a logging road with alot of trucks. They'd get right up to our bumper, moving pretty fast and scare the you know what out of us. Going down the mountain was even worse, there was no where to pull over for these guys. The famous DUEL movie would come to mind every time we took this joyous trip. :buggedout:
What about American Grafitti?
or Black Dog
I will try to remember some as I can..
You know one I haven't seen in years, but I remember it having a prominent black supercar? "Black Moon Rising." I should check that one out again. My mother loved that movie back then. I wonder if she still likes it or it was just a phase.
That one's pretty bad. I covered it recently in my "It Came From My Collection" thread over at scifilm. Never have I seen so many talented actors in something so well...average and forgettable. And from a script by John Carpenter too.
Corvette Summer - a nice cheesy slice of 70's fashion, music and sensibilities.
I don't watch too many car movies, but one I always hear my friends saying is really bad is Red Line. I actually saw it in the Wal-Mart dump bin and was almost tempted to pick it up just to see how bad it actually is.
Though it's not a movie, I always liked Stephen King's Dolan's Cadillac. Very moody, kind of slow, but ending was totally worth it.
Maximum Overdrive would be my favorite, and my least favorite would be Trucks. Shows how much good and bad you can dp with the same source material.
Haven't seen The Car, but it's on Svengoolie this weekend...
Stephen King is usually good with his car stories. Dolan's Cadillac is a great story, as is the first 2/3 of Christine (I usually hate the ways King ends his novels).
Some of these are films with notable car chases:
Grand Theft Auto
The Driver
Bullitt
Cannonball!
Ronin
To Live and Die in LA
Grand Prix
Le Mans
Red Line 7000
Greased Lightning
The Last American Hero
Thunderbolt
Days of Thunder
License to Drive
The French Connection
Thunder Road
The Moonrunners
The Last Chase
The Last Run
The Gumball Rally
Road Games - semis, but if Maximum Overdrive counts, so should other trucker flicks.
The Rookie (1990)
No Man's Land[/i] (1987) - both are films built around car theft rings
The Italian Job - either versions but the first one is the one that really counts.
Honorable mention to the cars in Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, The Reivers and Pocket Money, they were practically characters in the films themselves.
I like
Smokey and the Bandit
Back to the Future
The Blues Brothers
Of course, the best car movie is "Cars." It not only features vehicles with elements of the . . .
1923 Ford Model T
1949 Mercury Club Coupe
1951 Buick Le Sabre
1951 Buick XP-300
1951 Hudson Hornet
1957 Chrysler Dart
1959 Chevrolet Impala
1960 VW Microbus
1970 Plymouth Superbird
1985 Mack Superliner
2002 Porsche 911 Carrera
Chevrolet Truck
Iso Isetta
Le Mans Endurance Racer
Mazda MX-5 Miata
Pirsch Pumper
Willys CJ-2A
Willys MB
but, the vehicles are voiced by such people as . . .
Owen Wilson
Darrell Waltrip
Tony Shalhoub
Michael Schumacher
John Ratzenberger
Joe Ranft
Jeremy Piven
Richard and Lynda Petty
Paul Newman
Edie McClurg
Cheech Marin
Jennifer Lewis
Jay Leno
Larry the Cable Guy
Richard Kind
Michael Keaton
Bonnie Hunt
Katherine Helmond
Tom Hanks
John Goodman
Dave Foley
Dale Earnhardt, jr.
Paul Dooley
Billy Crystal
Bob Costas
George Carlin
Mario Andretti
and Tim Allen
RCMerchant and Yaddo got to this one before me. They would make a neat collection.
Have these been listed?
Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry (1974)
Hollywood Knights (1980)
White Lightning (1973)
Eat My Dust! (1976)
The Lively Set (1964)
Viva Las Vegas (1964)
The French Connection (1971)

Goldfinger (1964)
Heart Like a Wheel (1983)
Johnny Dark (1954)
Grand Prix (1966)
Moonrunners (1975)
To Please a Lady (1950)
The Racers (1955)
I hope I didn't repeat any, but that's some I can think of.
HOT ROD GIRL (1956) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049335/) was actually a pretty good little film. I have a copy and enjoyed it.
There's also another one that I haven't seen yet. It stars Jack Nicholson and it's called THE WILD RIDE (1960) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054475/).
Another one is the original THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS (1954) (http://imdb.com/title/tt0046969/).
We might as well add any JD films or even coming of age films like AMERICAN GRAFFITI, GREASE, and REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE once we go that route. They seem to like drag racing.

LOL that looks brilliantly good/bad...is it on DVD?
I don't know if it's on DVD or not...truth to tell,I have'nt seen it since the 70's when it was on TV!I enjoyed though!(PS> thanx Andrew...I hadda hellava time trying to get that on for some reason...)
How about Thelma and Louise
Killdozer is a pretty good movie about a possessed piece of construction equipment, has all the elements I like in this type of film, isolated people, far from help and some really bizarre threat that they must overcome.
I also liked The Car, I think it's a pretty good story, the effects and acting are good. the black car and its driver(Satan ?) are menacing and it makes the wide open and lonely spaces of the southwest appear scary, even in broad daylite. I always wanted a car horn like the one in this movie. Other favorites would be:
Bullitt
Vanishing point
The Transporter
The Gumball Rally
Smokey and the Bandit
Duel
Death Race 2000
Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry
Heart Like a Wheel
Another one that I just remembered, looking at Scott's post of Hot Rod Girl (which has Tommy Ivo in it) is Ghost of Dragstrip Hollow (1959), also having Tommy Ivo. Its not that bad a flick, I like it..
**edited due to lack of quality spelling**
Mad Max - if that counts as a car film. The car and the chase scenes were outstanding. Also love Eat My Dust - saw that in the theatre when I was a kid and still love it to this day. The Wraith is another favorite, love that babe in there! The Gumball Rally is good too.
The worst - they recycled a whole lot of footage from Duel and used it for an episode of The Incredible Hulk TV show. Now that was bad!
Cheeseflixz mentioned "Hollywood Knights" That't one of my favorites, I remember in my early teen-age years I aspired to be "Newbomb Turk". I actually have the being obnoxious part down pretty well. .
The orginal Vanishing Point, not the remake. The remake should have had the tires shot out.

How about The Love Bug?
best: Little Miss Sunshine -- if it qualiifies?
worst: The French Connection 2
for a bad, or just low budget, car movie, how about "The Hi-Riders"
made in '78 (I think) and directed by Greydon Clark
The best chase scene is from BULLITT.
I love DIRTY MARY AND CRAZY LARRY too.
