I don't literally mean Good movies, but movies that would be good for watching on a cold night.
In addition to the cold temps (woohoo; it has climbed up to the teens in fahrenheit), we are now having snow and freezing rain (16 degrees and freezing rain; what the hell is up with that?).
For some reason, this puts me in the mood for watching John Carpenter's The Thing.
What movies do you get in the mood for when it is cold and snowy?
SNOW BEAST
THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN
THE SHINING
all favorites!
The Original THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD (1951)
THE INVISIBLE MAN (1933)
QUINTET
The Legend of Hell House
The Fog (original)
The Thing From Another World
It, The Terror From Beyond Space
Island of Terror
Any number of old Hammer or Amicus films for that matter.
Where Eagles Dare
Never Cry Wolf
Breakheart Pass
Death Hunt
The pilot movie for Due South
Once got in trouble when a bunch of us watched "The Thing" in the barracks (and we killed a bottle of peppermint schnapps). This was during a snowstorm in Boston. After it was over, a bunch of us got bundled up and ran around outside of the building. We came in through the front hatch with a road flare from somebody's car. The front entry was where the duty hut was located and the Marine on duty easily heard me say, "We've got to bring this whole place down under the ice." The intent of the whole skit was to annoy/alarm the Marine on duty and that worked pretty well.
"Legend" is another good movie for wintry nights. Seeing Jack burst up through the ice into that sudden blizzard will make you feel chilled to the bone in sympathy.
RollerCoaster
Cool Hand Luke (not bad movie I know but it's still a good choice)
Blues Brothers (again good movie but suitable choice)
Blues Brothers 2000 (ok theres yer bad movie)
UHF (the Weird AL movie)
Miracle Mile
Alive (1993)
Only one --
The best one --
"Curse of The Cat People" --
If you haven't seen it, you have no idea what I'm talking about.
Absolutely the very best snowy-day, Christmasy, cold-weather film of its ilk at any time, in any place.
( I have to indulge in hyperbole here, as I have a genuine interest in having more people from this site SEE this damn thing!!)
love
peter johnson/denny turn up the heat!!
Also, Menard, where do you live?
I still have 3 ft. of fluffy around my garage --
I live in Longmont, Colorado.
Someone said it was 6 degrees yesterday -- Liars! It was easily over 10!!

The snow was no more than an inch or two. Several inches of fluffy snow would be pretty, but this was spitting snow that compacts easily, gets dirty, then just looks ugly. Heck, it was around 20 this morning and it didn't feel bad, compared to the single digit temps of the previous days (now there is just something wrong when 20 feels okay).
Daimajin 2
Jack Frost (killer snow man, not freaky Russian fantasy flick)
John Carpenter's The Thing (seconding the notion)
Son of Godzilla
Deep Shock
Can't really think of too many others.
ANY Bela Lugosi movie. I love all his films,as does my wife.
CURSE of the CAT PEOPLE: I saw it as a kid,and at first I was a surprised as there are no "Cat people "in the film...but an excellent ghost movie! And it may be a B-movie,but being from Val Lewtons RKO B unit of the 40's (ie The BODY SNATCHER,BEDLAM) is enuff recomendation for anyone to see it!
Count me as another CURSE OF THE CAT PEOPLE fan. My review:

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (from Rankin Bass)
Jack Frost (also from Rankin Bass)
Rudolph's Shiny New Year (Rankin Bass again)
KING KONG ESCAPES
There's always Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

That's a brilliant review, Gerry!!
You really capture the nuances of Curse & tell why it's a film worth seeing --
No doubt, the light and shadow in the garden, especially when we first see Irena in the "flesh", as it were, were the product of Lewton's "hands-on" role as a producer.
Also, I didn't mind the fake Hollywood snow so much -- to me, it added to the artifice/dreamworld quality of the film. We're only ever in the snow when something creepy with Irena is going on, or if the little girl is hallucinating the Headless Horseman, or some such. The snow itself becomes part of the "Curse" --
Just a damn fine picture. I wish more people would see it.

We had weird storm up here in the Puget Sound area near the end of last year (I'm trying to get people to call it "the storm of aught six"), power went out, and the family stayed up all night watching the sky be all green and everything. There was a weird "boink" sound coinciding with the lightning, seemed too soon for us to be hearing the thunder. I kept wishing they would play this http://otr.net/r/xmn1/44.ram old X Minus One episode on the radio.
OT: What happened to that thread where the guy was asking for advice for making a scary movie? I had more for him, on account of my great wisdom.

Well if we're going the opposite :hot: way:

It was caused by Flying Saucers! No doubt about it....the boinking gives it away.An extraterrestrial orgy! :teddyr:
'Fraid the only time I can answer this is on a cold night.
The Boogens!!
Heroes of Telemark - not the most exciting movie, but some awesome snowy scenery.
RAVENOUS! It's what's for dinner.
A nice big meaty stew is the perfect accompaniment for watching this on a blustery evening.
...then warm up with some THE BOUNTY. Nothing's more rewarding than seeing people cavorting around in paradise...and payin' for it!
All very good choices so far. I'd like to add "Terror in the Midnight Sun," and "The Great Silence."
That Twilight Zone/Midnight Sun episode was an inspired choice, as that one has both fire AND ice --

One that I can recommend for a cold night (yes, it does get cold here in Africa!) is Mathieu Kassovitz's The Crimson Rivers where almost everything, the snow and the ice included, seems to be infected by evil.
If you haven't seen this one, take a tip from me: Don't eat during the opening credits. Trust me. :buggedout:
Night Gallery's "Silent Snow, Secret Snow".
THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK.
The Exorcist. Since the cold and the darkness helps go with the mood of the movie.
