Back in the day, among the other shows I used I watch on the sci-fi channel (FT13: the series, Quantum leap, Hammer house of horror, War of the worlds, tales from the darkside, etc.) one show I loved (and really frigging want on DVD) was the Oddysey. And no, I'm not talking about the miniseries with Armand Assante and Isabella Rosselini; this was a TV series that came out in Canada in 1992 (and later, thanks to syndication, sci-fi). It was aimed at children and preteens, but was more intellegent and had more depth to it than most of the other crap aimed at that age group.
13 year old Jay Ziegler refuses to accept the fact that his father has died, instead believing he faked his own death and would eventually return. As he and his friend Donna play in a treehouse, some bullies show up to harass them. It ends with Jay falling from the treehouse and into a coma. While his mother and friends worry over his condition in the Upworld (the real world), Jay Finds himself in Downworld, a bizzare fantasy world in which only children exist and have control. He is joined by Flash (the downworld counterpart of one of the bullies) and Alpha (the counterpart of Donna). While fighting off the Nazi-like regime of monitors, led by Macro (played by a young Ryan Reynolds) and his seer Medea, Jay must find his way back to the Upworld, and also solve the mystery of his father's disappearance.
