Title: Kiss Meets the Phantom of the Park.
Post by: Torgo on March 12, 2007, 10:43:00 PM
A friend of mine got this on Ebay a couple of weeks ago and us & some of our friends suffered through it this past weekend.

Basically, it's just one big combined infomercial for the 70's Magic Mountain and KISS (as if KISS needed any more exposure by 1977).

I love how they completely dubbed drummer Peter Criss' voice!  Gene's fight with some police men in an alley is priceless though, especially when he completely destroys a vendor's stand at the end of it.

The best scenes are when we first see KISS and they are literally flying (via really bad matte screen work) to the stage.

The scenes that involve KISS are completely entertaining for all of the wrong reasons, but the remaining scenes are almost as bad as chinese water torture.

But it's still absolutely inexcusable on any level as a whole, even if you're a hardcore KISS fan IMO.

Haha I mentioned this about six months ago - my brother-in-law has this sucker taped on a VHS ...and you've reminded me that I must borrow this.   I tried watching it a few years ago and didn't make it very far.  This movie definitely needs reviewed here someday.

Last year sometime, I was watching some rockumentary on VH1 (I think) and KISS were making fun of it, which I think is in good sport.  They knew they sucked at acting and can enjoy a good laugh about it.  I remember Paul saying that Ace wasn't showing up to the shootings so he was played by various others (in one scene, he was played by a huge African American I guess).

All that I can remember is that each of them had some special power. Paul had eye beams; Gene had fire breath; Ace could teleport; and Peter...well...Peter could make cat puns.  Maybe Peter was "supposed" to be the funny one <shrugs>.

Like I said, I've heard enough about this that I really need to watch it.

I own it on VHS - sure it's bad, but imo not worse than some of the other stuff we here gravitate to.  It's only supremely painful if you go into it expecting something that it is not (cinematic perfection).

In context, it's an entertaining movie.  The acting stinks, the story is dumb, there's some pretty good 70's rock - what's not to love?

PS: I've mentioned this before, but cannot help it again.  My best friend in high school was at the taping of the conert scenes.  More useless trivia....

Seeing as I don't have a VHS player, the only DVD copies of it are approximately $40, because it's rare and a collector's item.

The question:  Is this worth $40?  Because I'm seriously contemplating it.

I remember watching it on TV the night it originally aired and thinking it was pretty good (hey I was nine years old !  :teddyr: ). The following Monday at school, a classmate swore up and down with all his breath that the band members really did have the powers and abilities that they displayed in the movie. I was nine, but I wasn't stupid. I told him he was moron.

If you search Youtube a bit, you can see quite a lot of the movie & decide for yourself.
