Is it a testement to Carpenter's influence in filmmaking that so many of HIS films from relatively early in his career are being remade?
THE FOG
ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13
THE THING (just talk, or is it really being remade?)
ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK
Just wondering: is there any other single director whose work is being remade as much or more?

Shakespeare was not a film maker.
Why are they remaking movies?????  Are the writers getting lazy, are the orginal directors getting greedy?
Also, if there is a remake of the Thing, this will be the second one. Carpenter's movie was a remake of the Thing From Outer Space.
If they make the Thing again, I do not think it will be as scary as Carpenter's. He relied on the unknown, not the graphic stuff. I have a feeling if the Thing is remade, it will be very graphic and not scary.
Just my $.02.

Gah! Not Snake Plissken! Jeez, that wasn't even a super epic movie or anything, just a suttle movie that cool, not wicked well-known. No one can replace Snake! Noooooo ooonnnneee!!!
(Sigh, i should just stop looking at the press news board, its really making me feel down, stupid goddamn remakes!! rawr rawr rawr!!!!!!!)
Alternate version of NYC or set in the future again? Maybe go forward more so the film isn't a relic so quickly.
If they play off the crime and sleaze crackdown of Giuiliani's time in office and the PC/safety nanny stuff that Bloomberg is doing now they could get some good social satire to go with the action. Times Square is again a cesspool, but with criminals in porno show versions of all the popular family friendly musicals making the rounds now. But I ain't holding my breath.
Plus you'd really have to work over the set-up in a post-9/11 world. Terrorists take over a plane, much less Air Force One? Crash it into a building on Manhattan Island? Tough sells in an action film these days.
Do have a tough time seeing anyone but Kurt as Snake. Plus who could fill the Hauk role? Stacy Keach had a tough enough time playing the same type of character in the sequel. Maybe they won't take the obvious choice and get a rapper to play the Duke.
Leave Escape from NY alone, but please please remake Escape from LA. The original-[if you can call it that] stunk!
Whynnot just round off a trilogy with something like Escape from Chicago? A remake is not necessary when you could do cool stuff with another sequel.
Did anybody else feel like Ghosts of Mars was a lot like and Escape from Mars with Ice Cube in the Snake part?

Well there was that whole EMP the entire world ending of the second film. You'd have to come up with a major story to avoid it just being yet another post-apocalyptic retread. Plus Snake would not be too popular with the regular folks who had something resembling a normal life before he did that, if word could spread who did it. And what was left of the US government would probably do that if they couldn't kill him themselves.
Maybe do it as a neo western, 21st century people trying to get by in a world with technology several centuries behind that at best. Say that the few pocket of civilization that didn't collapse into anarchy have built themselves up to a 16th-19th cenutry level. It could be done but the backstory explanation would be a bit much for regular audiences. It might work better in comics, TV, anime, or even novels instead.
To the
Ghosts of Mars point, not really to me. It felt more like Carpenter was remaking another Howard Hawks/siege picture yet again. Part of why I got tired of him.
There we go... I think there have been more remakes of Howard Hawks movies than Carpenter movies.

Steam power would still work, so after an initial massive die out in the 1st world and more crowded countries, I don't think it would take a super long time to get back to late 19th century levels.
Of course, I don't think that would really happen in Snake's lifetime in more than a few areas :-P
