Title: Popcorn (1991)
Post by: SaintMort on March 18, 2007, 05:04:33 PM
So I got this flick on my netflix and I was expecting it to be really really bad but I was actually quite entertained anyone else see this flick and what did you think about it?

I loved the parodies of 50's horror/sci-fi flicks

"Buy a bag...Go home in a box!"
I enjoyed it myself quite a bit...my being a Jill Schoelen fan notwithstanding.   I thought it did a decent job of tapping that William Castle spirit.  MATINEE was a good homage to the era, but I think POPCORN was a nice stab at (to borrow the recently overused euphemism) reimagining the concept.

Having suckled significantly on the cathode ray teat growing up, I was overjoyed to see Tom Villard in there.  I remembered him from WE GOT IT MADE...about the two dudes who have a live-in maid played by Teri Copley.  Sadly, I believe he died of AIDS related illness in the mid 90s.

...and, of course, it's awlays excellent to see Tony Roberts in a genre effort.

I really liked the film.  I picked it up from DeepDiscountDVD for a few bucks about a year ago.

The fake 50s films are great, as are the gags that they setup for the audience.  I could have done without the Reggae band though as it kept taking me out of the film.

All I remember is the ads they showed for it around the Super Bowl...this football player came over to talk to a reporter after winning a big game, and the reporter gives him the "What are you gonna do next?" line from the Disneyworld commercials.  And instead, the player suddenly shouted "I'm gonna see 'Popcorn'! Whooooooo!"...then they showed a scary montage of scenes from the film...made quite an impression on me at 10 years old.  :tongueout:

This is a decent little movie.  It's got some good scenes in it.

Did this flick see a theatrical release?

Soylentgreen, you forgot to mention the lovely Jill Schoelen, whose wood-lathe voice and ebon locks have graced many a Stepfather movie. Her spunk is at the heart of Popcorn, in my opinion, and keeps it from being too much of a satire.

This was such a box office disappointment in the United States that in many markets it bypassed first run cinemas and was booked directly into second run/discount cinemas.

Oh no, Biff.  I could never overlook her.  Something about Jill has always kept me an enthusiastic fan of hers.
  SSSHHHhhhhhh..... Even CURSE II: THE BITE!

(Though any film with Jill Schoelen, Bo Svenson and Jamie Farr has got to satisfy some perverse need in any Bad Movie fan's life.)

Hah, that has "must-see" written all over it!
