Title: Anyone seen Ozone?
Post by: BTM on March 19, 2007, 09:41:21 PM
Okay, here's a film, to me, that falls in the cateogory of "Great Premise, So-So Execution" (been meaning to do an entire thread on movies like that).  Anyway, here's the basic summary:

There's a new drug on streets called Ozone.  Those it doesn't kill, it turns then into powerful deranged mutants and hideous zombie-like monsters.  Interrupting a drug deal, detective Eddie Boone is injected with the drug.  Now, fighting hallucinations and mutanted addicts, Eddie goes exploring in the city for his kidnapped partner, and the person responsible for Ozone's creation.

Like I said, sounds pretty cool.  A drug turning people into monsters?  Well, it has it's moments, but parts of the film aren't the best due to the obviously limited budget (even with the new DVD release where the film's original director (same fellow who did Dead Next Door, btw) got the money to replaces some of the older effects with new, digital morphs) and the disjointedness of the script.  But, to me, it's still worth a look despite it's flaws.

UPDATE: Just read the budget on this film was only $3,500 (circa '93, for whatever that's worth.)  A very impressive achievement.  When I say the low budget hurts the film though, I mean that purely in the "I wish this film had gotten better funding, so they could have done more" sense.

Probably the best thing about the movie is the fellow playing the main character, an actor by the name of James Black.  He gives the role far more credibility than perhaps a film like this might deserve: he plays it straight, and you believe he really is a cop facing a set of really bizarre situations.  I've checked JB's profile at imdb, and it looks like he's starting to get some more attention from Hollywood (at least some decent guest starring roles) like in Six Feet Under, Charmed, and there's a rumor he'll be in the '08 version of Masters of the Universe (no, I didn't know they were making another one either.)  Hopefully it'll help him get the parts he deserves.

So, anyway, if you get a chance, check it out.
