Just picked up a copy of the latest screenings at one of my favourite cinemas in town, the ACMI cinemas in the city here in Melbourne. I just thought I'd share some of the upcoming films that might strike a chord here that they are screening over the next month or so.
Because this cinema is more like a museum [they have lots of exhibitions and 'play spaces' etc etc] they tend to have certain exhibits and focus on a number of works of certain directors, genres etc. I'm just going to list the films, since I can't be bothered typing in any details right at the moment, or visit the ACMI website if you really want a bit more info.
One such focus is the "Focus On Guillermo del Toro" which has them screening on the big screen here:
Pan's Labyrinth
Cronos
Blade II
Mimic
Hellboy
Devil's Backbone
And a few films picked out by Del Toro:
George A Romero's "Martin"
Mario Bava's "Black Sunday [The Mask of Satan]"
and the cinematic classic, "Night of the Hunter"
The next in the Focus series is a Focus On Punk, running from 11 to 20 May.
Films include:
The classic post-apocalyptic punk film "Jubilee" [which I'm a big fan of]
Suburbia
Ghost on the Highway: A portrait of Jeffrey Lee Pierce and Gun Club
Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains
Punk and the pistols
Made In Britain
Billy Childish and the Chatham Super 8 Cinema
the John Waters film, Desperate Living
Repo Man
the Great Rock and Roll Swindle
and a series of short films, based on Punk and Post-Punk, and NYC No Wave.
On top of these "Focuses" ACMI also have showings of cult films every friday at 10pm in a series called "Freaky Fridays"
Coming up in the next two months are:
Jason and the Argonauts
Friday the 13th
The Loved One
Motel Hell
Shock Corridor
Re-Animator
Prick Up Your Ears
Wild Zero
Plus on top of that, if that's not enough [and they show more than that anyways] but they're also showing a number of Michael Mann films as well.
Phew, busy busy...
So after all that, is there any films that I just listed [including Mann's work] that really does need to be seen on the Big Screen? I need to whittle down the list to a manageable size, since all those on the list look like they're worth a look-in...
Hmm....
Out of the list, these are the ones I'd kill to see at a theater:
Martin
Black Sunday
Night Of The Hunter
Repo Man
Great Rock N Roll Swindle
Friday 13th
Motel Hell
Re-Animator - This one is a must!
Wild Zero
As for the Michael Mann films, I'd recommend seeing Heat, Manhunter, and The Keep. Those are the best of his work in my opinion.
I would LOVE to see Bava's BLACK SUNDAY on the big screen...sigh....
Depending on the times, I'm going to try and get to a few this time [I keep saying it but never make the effort, just too busy]
But it looks like I'll have to add Black Sunday to the list, along with Motel Hell and Martin. Still tossing up between some of the others so far, and some I already either own or have seen already and don't feel the need to again.
