Title: Bad Movies the Card Game
Post by: clockworkcanary on April 18, 2007, 08:14:55 AM
I've been trying to think of ways to make a card game based on bad movies (especially the ones already reviewed/mentioned on this site).  I've just  been kinda brain storming about the different types of cards and plays that could happen, yet I'm trying not to copy any card games that already exist (but maybe borrow some elements).  Still haven't figured out what the object would be, but I can design the cards pretty much from the ground up.

Anyway, anyone else got some ideas for any of these categories or any other 2 cents you might wanna chip in on?

Here's some notes I have so far:

Location Cards (maybe standard generic ones like "high school" don't do a whole lot where as the special places do something a little more):
Crystal Lake, Elm Street, Haddonfield, Parts Unknown, High School, The Mall, Abandoned Warehouse, Downtown, Nuclear Test Site, Toxic Waste Dump,  graveyard, Science Lab, Space Station,

Factions: zombies, ninjas, mutants, aliens, teachers, robots, animals, clowns, demons, etc.,

Archetype Cards: -maybe each player draws one of these for their role in the story
Prankster, Coach, Token Minority, Wise Old Man, b***hy Lady, Old drunk, Lady's Man, Backstabber, Town Drunk, Village Idiot, Nerdy Geek, etc

Cast Cards: specific references to characters from famous b-flicks:
Tom Hanks (Mazes and Monsters), Hulk Hogan (anything), Torgo (Manos), you get the idea

Plot Devices: murder weapons, quest objects, utility device, tech gizmo, family heirlooms, etc.,

Plot Cliché Cards: I am your father, token minority dies, Mentor dies,

Other cards: Stock footage cards, Dues Ex Machine(sp?) Cards (It was all a dream, pet saves the day, etc., )

Anyone else got any ideas for the cards, the game, the rules, etc.?

Hmmm. You have my wheels spinning. It is quite do-able and probably easier to patent than some ideas. I just came up with some good ideas, but they can not be released at this time.

Darn capitalism.

Good idea, CC.

You are welcome to use my image as either the backs for the cards or as a visual depiction of the village idiot or the town drunk.  :teddyr:

Hehe ok Trevor - I'll keep that in mind :)  Thanks too.

Yeah Scott - I can relate - I've thought many times about whether I should even post my ideas, but I figure I can always come up with ideas for something else if someone else grabs the idea and runs with it.

I think I could also make a board to go with the cards (mix between board and card game maybe?) ...but a lot more specific to bad movies than the old monopoly-spoof board I did.

You can make a videogame or a flash about badmovies but still use cards even have badmovie music in the background ... I make .exe format mini games all the time ... GML code. this way you can play online or share via website. Just an idea for you if that helps any  here is some of my own work its old tho Im better at it now this is 3 years old. All my own art. It was a game called Bloodlust Blockula 2003
PIC - http://img206.imageshack.us/img206/3692/blockulascreen2tx.jpg or the play the demo arrows keys move Blockula :)
DEMO - http://host-a.net/venomx/Blockula.exe I used gamemaker 6.1 this is so you get the idea of gamemaking.

First off, awesome idea. Secondly, I would buy this game. Lastly, I reccomend Party Beach as one of the locations and Larry Buchanan's stable of goofy creatures as monsters.

That is a great idea.  However, you want to check out "Graverobbers from Outer Space" before you start, just to make sure you aren't unintentionally infringing on someone else's copyright.  Go to http://www.zmangames.com/ (http://www.zmangames.com/), click card games, and scroll down.

Sounds sweet.. but it might be better for the players to choose thier own roles. Otherwise if your the backstabber or the minority you're going to get majorly screwed.

D'oh!  They've got a "Janitor" character.  That was going to be my suggestion to clockwork.  :bluesad:

This ZManGames site seems to confirm a growing fear I've had...that no matter how cool an idea you have, someone somwhere has probably beaten you to it!

Quite some creativity at work there.  I think I will be snapping up that Bell-Bottomed Badasses game myself....Creature: Officer Whitebread...Traits: Honky(!)

Yeah there are some cool games on that site, but the Graverobbers one seems to be a lot like Magic: The Gathering, and save for spoof cards I've designed in the past, I don't really want it to be that much like Magic.  I'd rather focus on the "bad" aspect of the films rather than the "b" aspect, at least for one version anyway.

I was thinking that maybe each player is a director who draws cards for their characters -that way they don't get stuck with just one crappy one.  Not sure how to determine who wins or how (maybe who draws in the most box office on "release day" but then I haven't figured out how that would be determined.  Anyway, I'm kinda fuzzy on the objective at this point.

Love the suggestions so far - party beach is a great location.   I'm thinking if I make a board version, that's where the locations could be (and they have cards that correspond in one deck) ...anyway great suggestions all - still brainstormin

Edited to add: Ok, loved the party beach location enough so I decided that will be my first prototype location card.  I'm not sure what all to list on the card - need a good quote, maybe a schill for a movie with that kinda scene (Satan's Cheerleaders comes to mind), and maybe some pluses to some categories.  For example, I thought of a few ratings that locations can give:

Party Beach Card: +2 smut (bikini clad women is always a plus to box office), +2 partying (drugs, sex, rock n roll), and nothing to add to some of the others: Explosions +0, Ass-kickings(or fight) +0...haven't thought of anything else yet.  Any suggestions?

Actually, party beach could get fight points, as there's almost always a Charles Atlas ad type sequence of sand kicking and macho posturing for the "chickies".

Good point  - even in the pic I have for the card, a scene from Satan's Cheerleaders, the girls are having a piggy-back chicken fight (not really sure if that's considered free-use though).  Maybe Fight +1 or something?

Also, anyone have suggestions on the board layout?  I was thinking of having multiple, criss-crossing streets to special locations (corresponding to the cards), where players start at a certain spot (maybe determined by their main character card?).  Ideas?

And with Andrew's permission, maybe we could make cards for popular reviewed films here on the site - a couple from each slime rating (where the rating has an effect on the game play somehow).  For example, drawing the "Killer Klowns from Outer Space" would be worth 5 while Mutant is worth nothing.

Edited to add again:  Ok got a first prototype for a set location: Party Beach.  It's just a prototype for testing - the info on it isn't set in stone (not even sure what all the modifiers will mean yet).  Feedback is encouraged.

I don't think you'd need my permission to make cards for films that I have reviewed, but thank you very much for the thought.  I'd be quite honored if you created cards for any of the films, due to the reviews.

Or are you planning on printing my review in its entirety on the card?  I think that might be a little hard to read.  Easier than one of Ken Begg's.  One of his reviews printed on a card would require an electron microscope...

This is a neat idea, nonetheless -- you need to have a "REEL MISSING" card for losing turns, though.
