Title: RE-ANIMATOR
Post by: KYGOTC on April 23, 2007, 07:34:33 PM
As most of you know, Anchor Bay has just released a fancy pasny special edition of H.P. Lovecraft's RE-ANIMATOR. I just went out and bought it over the weekend, and I just now watched it.

Before I go into the actual movie itself, how bout those preveiws, eh? First there was some trailer about a whichhouse or something. Meh.
Then the trailer for PHANTASM came on. All I have to say about that is; I finaly see what all the hubub is about.
Then the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DORKS came on. Not bad lookin for a forin film.

ANYWAYS, on with the feature presintation. Guys, If you havent seen this yet, and you consider yourself a true b-movie fan, go watch this. NOW. I mean, not now, after you read this. This is a CLASSIC. Packed with gore, a truely unique plot, VERY good acting for a b-flik, and theres always some humor around the corner. And for you lonley types, there plently of nudity. :bouncegiggle:.

SPOILER!

The one thing I didnt like was the damn cliffhanger ending. Is West alright? What happened to that guys girlfriend?

4 slimes. And Im being a little nit-picky at that.

I read the story in Lovecraft compilation.  I hope the movie is as good as the book.

Actually, you don't have to be left hanging. BRIDE of RE-ANIMATOR came out in 1989! And yes...Herbert West is back...and it's just as fun and gory as #1,only directed by Brian Yunza! Own both movies...love them both!

So would that make BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR the 3rd film, or is there something in between?

Bride is the second and Beyond is the third. I didn't care for Bride but Beyond was kinda fun. Neither of them ,though, compare to the first one. Thank your lucky stars you have not had to sit through the 'R' rated version which is actually longer and was appropriately described as the Masterpiece Theater version; meaning they successfully made the movie boring as hell.

Barbara Cramptom was a doll back in the day.

She looks even better in From Beyond in which she gets to try on and use som S&M gear.   :tongueout:

You've got to see Beyond Re-animator. It's by Brian Yuzna as well (I think), so you get lots of sick gore, AND Elsa Pataky is in it! Wait for the ending credits, for a fight between a lab rat and a re-animated penis.

Then the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DORKS came on. Not bad lookin for a forin film.

Guy literally looses his testical and has to run around the room to find it and all you can say is it's not "bad lookin"?  I thought it was weird and hilarious, and I don't particularly like zombie movies.

Wasn't that the one that aired on sciffy?

Didn't really watch it.  Seemed okay.  Meant to get it on DVD but never did.   I think it might be OOP now.  :bluesad:

Bride is a fun film.  It doesn't have all of the excessive gore of the original but it's still worth a watch.

Beyond is a great flick and very much in the same spirit as the original.  I caught this one at midnight in a local theater.  Really fun.

Night Of The Living Dorks is actually really good.  It's a German zombie/teen comedy.  I picked it up when it finally got released here in the states by Anchor Bay.  Don't expect a lot of horror.  It's the film that John Hughes would have made had he decided to make a zombie flick in the 80s.

I don't know that Re-Animator belongs in the Bad Movie forum. It's a damn fine movie, IMO. One of the best horror-comedy films ever.

Here's how I rate the trilogy out of 4 stars:

1) Re-Animator        ****
2) Bride of Re-Animator   ***
3) Beyond Re-Animator   *1/2

Off Topic Metadiscussion:

Hehe, yeah, well we find that that the phrase "Bad Movie" is really more of an umbrella term.  For one thing, it was only recently that a "Good Movie" forum was added, so previously, ALL movie discussions happened in the "Bad Movie" space.

That said, "Bad" means different things to different people.  Some use it to mean bad as in bad, bad as in good, anything low budget (B), anything cult-and-not-mainstream, etc.  It's a fluid term.

The original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD is definitately NOT a bad movie.  Yet it is reviewed on this site.  Should it not be?

For the same reason that quite a few "good" movies appear in "Bad Movie Reviews" on this site, I think (this is only my opinion) RE-ANIMATOR belongs in the "bad" (ie, cultish, relatively low budget horror) movie discussion area.

Wow, "Bad Movie" is a hard genre to define....

Re-Animator was the movie that got me into a full-on horror geek lifestyle. I'd seen plenty of bad movies and other horror flicks before it, but Re-Animator struck a chord in my skull that's still reverberating around in there today. It's funny because if it weren't for the Re-Animator comic book, which I picked up in a discount bin at my old four color haunt, I wouldn't have sought the film... in which case I probably wouldn't have gotten so into horror movies... in which case I never would've met my girlfriend of 8 years in a horror movie chat room like I did... crazy.

And if you want to see one of the most unsettling bastard creations of dance music and horror movies, you have to pick up the Beyond Re-Animator DVD and watch the disturbingly catchy music video "Move Your Dead Bones" by this guy calling himself Dr. Reanimator... or, you can gird your loins and click this link (http://youtube.com/watch?v=XG2t8jHHH_I)... always remember kids, re-animate your feet...

At one point William H. Macy was tapped to play the president, but I think that all talks about doing the film period have stalled/fallen through.
